I get the feeling that Kerry's speech today deflated Repubs hopes somewhat
Perhaps it's just that the people here are a little more positive today? Whatever, I feel that the Repubs are just a little down today and I believe Kerry's speech before the American Legion may have deflated them just a bit. Anyone else pick up these vibes ?? :)

2. I get the feeling they blew their wad with Arnold...New York hates their
fucking guts, Zell's commercial will backfire with his keynote address and Crashcart's approval rating means his speech coverage will be largely negative.

31. I agree
IMO they had big hopes for Ahnold's speech, but I'd bet that it's only going to hurt the Gropinator, and do nothing for the Chimp.

4. Yes, but..
the vibe had started before Kerry's speech.

I think their convention is going over like a lead balloon. Kerry's speech kept the momentum going, though.

5. Good vibrations are most excellent.
But I doubt repubs paid much attention to Kerry today.
Much more importantly Kerry's speech helps buoy us dems.

Well good for him! I had never heard of him expressing any opinion in the race. Do you have a link to a report?

10. I feel better

because I saw the speech and I watched the C-SPAN Democrat truth squad press conference which was kick ass, and Kerry didn't take the bait that the RNC is dangling like mad. He didn't do anything remotely resembling an apology at the Legion speech. Thus, I feel much better today than I did yesterday. Oh, that comedy act the convention last night brightened things up a bit too.

12. from watching the "After Hours" show on MSNBC...
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 05:51 PM by Chili
...Pat Buchanan was spewing this theory that John Kerry had better get down on his knees and apologize to that AFL audience today, and beg their forgiveness for what he said in his 1971 testimony or else he was... DOOMED. This was repeated around the table, that Kerry had better do SOMETHING different at this speech, or the veterans were going to boo him, heckle him, protest his very presence.

How disappointing, then, for Kerry to give a good speech, make his points, and still get applause (though not wild applause) in front of such a conservative veteran audience... and all without groveling. I was afraid to watch it, expecting the worse... and it was an important non-event event - he faced them, he spoke to them, and he was received without hostility. Whether he won them over or not is almost beside the point.

I think one of the things these assholes are forgetting is that the veterans themselves - those who support Kerry - talk to each other. For every veteran angry at Kerry, there are 2 who support him, and who defend him, probably to their veteran brothers. I'll bet their grapevine and underground is a lot more powerful than anyone imagines. "They are lying!" has to resonate with some of them.

Take THAT Swiftboat liars and smug Republican bullies!

ETA - whoops! Sorry, took too long typing all that... what you all said!

14. Kerry Not Only Got Solid Applause... He Got CHEERS
I listened it to again on CSPAN.

He also had to pause a couple of times for clapping.

Also factor in that this wasn't a rally and there were no mikes on the audience.

That you could hear such solid clapping with no mikes on people says a lot.

18. you're right...
...that's why the applause sounded muted. And the podium was high above the floor, too, a setup not very conducive to intimacy. And he still pulled it off!

21. I had some trepidation when i turned the tv to the speech
But it was soon clear that the veterans were displaying their dignity. They don't from the bottom of the outhouse where Rove's head resides. Their applause was respectful and the cheers sounded genuine.

I do agree with Kentuck. The nay sayers just don't get it.

22. What is also forgotten is that many, MANY people opposed the Vietnam war.
Especially by 1971 when Kerry testified. Those folks have not disappeared.

The Republicans are acting on their own revisionist history.

13. Positive vibes
His speech today was amazing. Dare I say as good as the one at the DNC?

Don't let all this media attention about the RNC get to you.

After hearing Kerry's speech, I know for certain Kerry has what it takes to win down the stretch.

But I already knew that.

It just seems like some people need to be reminded.

27. Nah, they were just crusty old Republicans. Sean Hannity had one on and
he said he would have done that to ANY democrat -- and he agreed that war crimes were committed in Vietnam! Their protest wasn't specific to John Kerry.

Kerry gave a great speech, and I'm sure that helped. I'm telling ya', the man acts and looks and sounds like a PRESIDENT! Maybe we just needed to see that again.

19. How can anyone
either read or hear a speech by Kerry

and read or hear a speech by Bush

and still vote for Bush? I just don't get it! One is intelligent and articulate and talks about the real issues and the other is a moron who can barely link two words together and spews meaningless catchphrases.

I really honestly don't get it........ :wtf:

23. Iowans offended, Jews-same, Vermonters angry, Vets up in arms....
then the Bush twins had to go and prove they are the no-class airheads
everyone suspected them of being.

I don't think their Convention is going that well. They whipped out their one
and only Celebrity (by the way, won't largely Democratic Calif. by a bit irked
at that "True Lies" remark?), and its down hill from there.

And don't believe for a moment that the protests aren't getting to them.

30. Two-thirds of Americans believe Viet Nam was a mistake
Does Rove really want to fight this battle? My greatest disappointment with Clinton is that he chose to downplay his opposition to that war. How is this country ever going to snap out of its militaristic pretensions if every politician pretends ALL wars were great?
