My trip to Beaverton,OR campaign office
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 07:24 PM by kerryin2004
So this was my second trip today to a campaign office and although the people were nicer I encountered a couple of setbacks..

I called them this afternoon and spoke to Kathleen and she expressed that I could come in and discuss canvassing with them.. So I did, and here is my impression..

I get there and I meet Kathleen, but she is occupied and I end up spending the majority of time with Ashley.. She is a sweet young lady, but she has alought to learn about interviewing.. She asks me where I am from and I tell her Texas, and she asks whether I just moved to here.. I explained that I am staying here, if I stay till election I will attempt to register here, but as much as I love it here I don't know if I would be able to handle the winters..So we continue to talk and I express the fact that I may need 40 hours instead of the 30 hours at their $8.00 hour pay scale in order to stay here until the election.. Listen Ashley, a hotel cost 200 a week, food is 30 a week, gas is 30, and even at 40 hours I probably would have to dip into my own personal funds for shiat that may come up..

So she suggest that I get another job while I work as a canvasser?? WHAT?? Honey I am willing to work for a rate that is less then a Safeway cashier, and not only that, but I would be willing to work extra hours as a volunteer, unpaid, I probably wont stay after the election, as my comment about winter implied, and you expect me to get a job just so I can help you campaign?? Is this girl for real??

So here is the big kicker, the funniest part of it all..At the end of our conversation Ashley tells me that if I am still interested I should email them my resume and references.. I can understand a criminal background check(mine would be clean) but you insult me by telling me that to work your below poverty wage of $8.00 an hour job I have to show you my resume and references?? Honey if we are talking serious work, a job that last more then two months then maybe, but I am going to cost you more then $8.00 an hour..

So I try a couple of more numbers tomorrow, any other suggestions of persons to call would be greatly appreciated... If that doesn't work out I am heading back and I loved my stay here!
