Karen Hughes wrote twins' remarks
I thought so but hadn't seen anything to support it. I just read the semi-gushing WP article and finally got to this graph:

"Who knows what they were thinking? Calls for comment to campaign officials, the twins' spokeswoman, the first lady's press secretary and Republican National Committee officials went unreturned Wednesday. The remarks were written by Karen Hughes, a campaign aide told the Associated Press. And they were vetted by more than a dozen staffers, another campaign official said."

If this is any indication of what Karen Hughes is going to add to the Bush campaign, I say "Bring her on!"

3. I thought there has been a deterioration in BushCo's speeches lately
Whatever magic Karen Hughes had four years ago is definitely gone today.

9. It was always Hughes vs Rove
It has been pure Rove for a while -- she probably didn't have the empowerment to do anything in her usualy style.

Either way though, the Twins were like roadkill -- horrible, but you just have to look.

7. What I like is that those two would gladly go along with something so
absurd as that speech, using references to U2 and other uncharacteristic unhip shit.
A reasonable person would have refused to do it.

11. Daddy probably threatens
to cut off their trust funds, if they don't go along.

That's probably why they manage to blow it all the time. I think they do it on purpose. Pay back is such a mother, especially when it comes from your own kids.

12. Not Surprising
The only thing Karen Hughes has ever been good at is lying her ass off with a straight face, or believing her own lies. Either way she is a nutcase.

21. Believing her own lies
karen created Dubya. She created the image to be shown to the American people. The problem is that the image is false. It's a lie. The George W. Bush that exists in Karen's brain doesn't exist in reality. Likewise, Karen's view of how America would view the twins was because of an image of America that exists only between Karen's ears....not reality.

She believes the lies she created.

She's lost touch with reality.

13. That explains the wall to wall knee slappin' entertainment.

...Like that line about "Outkast". If that thing had been any more obtuse, it would have been fucking non-euclidian.

14. Did you see Berube?
Michael Berube has pretended all week to have been converted from left wing to Republican by "the eloquence" on view...here's his salute to Jenna and Drunka....

"Next up were the twins, Barbara and Jenna. And here, I think, is where my new party revealed a genius I didn't know it had. For years, progressive-left literary types like me used to taunt Republicans: "nyah nyah, nyah nyah," we suggested, "you don't know anything about surrealism, nyah nyah, never heard of the European avant-garde, la la la la la la." We thought we were the last word in urbane sophistication, and that Republicans could not begin to comprehend– or even catch– our allusions to figures like Bréton and Bataille. But then along come the Bush twins, and ooh la la, surrealism is born anew! "My Dad already had a chief of staff– and his name is Andy!" said Jenna. It is beyond humor, it is beyond your petty-ironic Democrat understanding. "Our parents' favorite term of endearment for each other is Bushy," they said, following this with "we had a hamster too, but our hamster didn't make it." What does this mean? you ask. Foolish liberal Democrats, fretting about "what does this mean, this strange talk of bushes and lost hamsters." It is not about meaning. It is about the irruption of the unconscious into the very fabric of everyday life, where the eye becomes an egg and the hamster disappears into the bushy undergrowth, there to be transformed into the heart and soul of America. Hah! Now we find that Republican diversity is even more diverse than Michael Steele and Arnold Schwarzenegger– it extends even to the domain of live performance art, where Barbara and Jenna Bush evoke Bréton and Bataille and Beavis and Butthead in an intertextual performance that leaves you girlie-men cultural-studies Democrats gasping for air. I especially liked the bit about how their parents taught them to respect everyone. Except the people we run against-- them we slime! Heh. Heh heh. Heh. "
