Poll question: Would Dems Allow Kerry Pro-Life Overture in Fight for Middle America Votes
Kerry, who as a Catholic has personally professed a antipathy toward abortion,
but as a legislator has never done anything that would show empathy with the anti-abortion
Catholics that form a significant portion of the electorate.

The Democratic Party's position on abortion looses Kerry at least 4% to George Bush.

Would Dems allow Kerry to offer some meaningful proposal to reduce the incidents of
abortion in the U.S. that is sympathetic to his fellow Catholics and others who oppose abortion?

Or would they join the Republicans and crucify him as a flip-flopper?

1. like sex education ? most liberals support that

as long as in terms of abortion rights, it remains legal.

but there is nothing wrong with sex education and teaching condom use and other things.

but the option of abortion rights still has to remain.

2. You can be pro life and
pro choice at the same time. Pro choice does not mean pro abortion in that you want women to have an abortion like it or not. Fact is, pro choice people support less abortions in the sense they support good education and birth control. If we had those two there would be far less abortions.

4. right, abortion rate goes down under prochoice President like Clinton
because they also support sex education and other things which help prevent unwanted pregnancies in the first place.

3. Can't answer this without more information -m
what kind of overtures are we talking about?

Anything that degrades a woman's right to autonomy over her own body is out.

But working toward better birth control? Helping make adoptions more affordable? Morning after pills OTC? Heck yeah.

Offering more choices is fine. Limiting choice is not.

5. I tried to open this discussion already.
Let's say it didn't get a warm reception.

I still think more actively focussing on contraception freedom at least in the political arena -- where we hear zip on it might help--

The religious wacko types-- not to be confused with the normal religious types--
wouldn't change thier votes anyway.
..and the Catholics would still attack Kerry.. but he could make the arguement for it..

They are already trying to limit access to the morning after pill--
Look out ladies.

The repub attack side of the arguement is irrelevant at this point
No matter what Kerry does he's a flippy flopper cause that's just who he is ,and no matter what * does he's not-
cause it's not his fault he comes across as an idiot.

8. no and i think kerry would be even farther ahead in the polls
if he'd come out as an anti war candidate -- to boot.
people know what democrats stand for -- and we stand for the right thing.
as others have pointed being pro-choice doesn't mean pro-abortion -- it means the whole range of education and options that allows individuals to control their own lives.
that is the very essence of self determination.
