I shook hands with both Barack Obama and Joe Biden today in Greensboro, NC ! PICS!!!!!!!!!!
Edited on Sat Sep-27-08 07:20 PM by CarolinaPeridot
I got in line at 5am because I was so determined. Mind you that I had been up since Friday 9:30 am to prepare for my class reunion and I went to the club last night. I circled the downtown area about 4 times. I was so determined that I was going to see Obama and Biden but I did not think that I would get this close.

I found the line at 5am and I was tenth in line. I was talking to the people around me like I knew them my whole life. We were in line from 5 am and at a quarter to 10 am, we were in lines waiting to go through security check points. I was so anxious the entire time, I can't tell you exactly how many people from my city came out but I was not trying to missed this oh no! I didn't get tired at all. So at a little after 10 am, I went through the security check point, I put my belt, cell phone, and keys down , walked through and I scooped up my stuff. "Walk don't run!" was what the volunteers were telling us (these volunteers work so hard) - I power walked it to the stage. I got the stage and I got right up front on stage left. I was right up front, first row, I was on the guard rail.

We had to wait another 2 hours and by that time the crowds were filling up. Everytime I turned around to look at the crowd, people were giving me the evil eye - I guess because I was up there so close. But hey I got there early, I wasn't trying to play and oh well, they should have been here. This one lady was trying to get me to switch places with her so she could hold her son up on the rail - I looked at her and turned right back around like I didn't hear her. CarolinaPeridot WAS NOT PLAYING! I WAS NOT GONNA GIVE UP MY SPOT THAT I STOOD IN LINE FOR 5 hours for! OH NO!

About 45 minutes before the rally started, they passed out the campaign signs. Oh by the way, it was a bit rainy but it cleared up. I kept it cute though LOL. The woman passing out the signs was on edge - these volunteers are so tired. Well I got my sign and I made sure all the kids around me got there signs.

20 minutes before the start of the rally we all kept on watching the doors behind the stage because we thought that they were gonna come out at anytime - nope lol right on the start time is when we saw their motorcade pull up. Then Secret Service came out. The head guy was checking everybody out. I didn't want make any kind of move because sharpshooters were all over the place. And you know they don't miss anything.

I had my camera ready yo! You could feel the anxiety in the air. People started screaming and we thought it was them but it wasn't. False alarm. Lawd I was so nervous with anxiety that my leg was trembling. Then for reals, Obama and Biden came out. I was screaming and jumping down so hard! They looked so thankful to see all of us. Obama was waving at us and I was waving extra hard to get his attention and he waved directly back to me! Joe Biden is Joe Cool - that's my dude right there! You can't mess with Joe!

Biden spoke first and while Biden spoke Obama was sitting right behind him on a stool and let me tell you guys: this man has it under control. He has this sense of peace over him that I just can't explain. I was taking pictures the entire time. And I will never forget this.

When they finished they walked around up front and Secret Service was on top of everything. When they tell you to keep your hand back , put your hand back! Obama came around first and when he was coming my leg was trembling again. I reached out and shook his hand and I said "Thank you!" and he looked back and said "No Thank you!" - he gives everyone one on one attention when he shakes their hand. Then Joe Biden came around and I said "How you doing Joe?" and he said " I am doing great, thank you people for coming out" and then he stopped and we told him I was there since 5am and he was thankful for our dedication. And I got super close up shots of both of their faces. Oh yeah. I can't believe I shook their hands.

People were pushing and that was the only negative. My back still hurts but I think that is because I am so damn tired from staying awake . But it was worth it. I saw Obama and Biden, and I shook their hands and I got so much hope. I feel so confident in this team of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I trust them completely that when they are elected, we are going to be alright. I was telling EVERYBODY all day how close I was and then I told everyone when I was walking back about how I was there since 5am and I shook their hands. I have a lot of email addresses from total strangers because I have to e-mail them the pictures I took.

I will never ever forget this day. I can't come down from this excitement. I know that Obama and Biden don't know my name but I hope they know that they gave this 28 year old girl from North Carolina a lot of hope.

I don't have a digital camera but I did take some pics on my cell phone lol. They are small but I will show the ones that are clear enough.

This is the podium right when I first got up front!

I was so hyped I forgot to zoom in. This is when they first came out.

Kind of blurry sorry but he was coming right up in front of me shaking hands and I didn't want to miss it!

This is when Obama was right beside me!

Joe Biden AKA Joe Cool right beside me again - told yall I was close!

Secret Service does not play.

Obama supporters

Picture of the giant American flag that was hanging all the way in the back of the crowd - I took a picture of this while I was on my way back to my car.

The next President of The United States of America, Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

The next Vice President of the United States of America, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr.

Joe reminds me of a legalized mafia boss with morals,he's laid back and in your face but he has a unique appeal with everyone he runs into. I've watched him since I was a little kid and its great to see him get what he deserves for serving this country.

13. This is history.
I am atheist, so I don't worship anyone, but I love Obama, and Biden. Obama really does make me want to be a better person because of the example he sets. I've always dreamed of having this kind of chance, and here it is.

17. Yes - I didn't want to use the word that it was a blessing...
But I felt blessed to get this close - something guided me to get this close. I want to be a better person after this moment. I have the tools and this just woke me up even more.

6. I'd have drooled within that proximity
Looks like the Secret Service had formed a wall around him - what they do has always fascinated me in an autistic kind of way. Did they screen you first? I especially worry about O's safety. For a wistful moment the other day, I allowed myself to worry more about that than Nov. 4th...

12. Everyone goes through security screening...
right before you get to the stage. It was further part away but getting there at 5am was a bonus. And there were sharpshooters on all the rooftops. The secret service head guy was checking me out as I was standing in front watching me for a couple of seconds as he did everyone else and I let him do it. Its his job and I want Obama and Biden safe.

I wouldn't have let anyone get through me, either. I know we're supposed to be benevolent and all, but if I had waited for 5 hours, no one who came in 4 hours later would get past me. Thanks for sharing! :kick:

I about to finally tear up. I thought I would have to wait until I was 70 something years old for a moment in time like this. And I am 28 years young and its here. I am so lucky to have been so close to history. I can't find words no matter how hard I try. I feel that we are going to win. I feel it!

24. At the event in Charlotte last weekend, there were crazy anti-abortion protesters
with huge bloody pictures and megaphone all along the line to get in. I had to stand in front of my very young children to keep them from seeing.

I shook Obama's hand at a primary rally. I was soooo excited. During his speech he would look in my general direction, but it felt like he was looking right at me. Guess that is part of his charisma, but it was still really cool.

18. I got to shake hands with our next President...
...a couple of years ago. He was campaigning for Corzine when he was running for Govenor of NJ. He, Obama, was just elected to the senate the year before and my husband and I found ourselves at the exit where allllllllllllll the dignitaries were existing so we decided to stick around to see who we would see. Lo and behold, Obama walks out and I just shove my hand (very unladylike) to shake his. He was not particularly thrilled, but he shook it anyway and I said, "I just wanted to shake your hand, Senator." My husband then shook his hand and said, "You shoud run. Kenyans run the best". He broke out into that smile we are all so used to now and said, "I like that".

I'm so happy for you - great pictures!

118. I can just see the movie -
An elderly woman, dignified but aged, is taking stock of the days of her life. A story begins . . . the scene fades . . . and we see a beautiful, bright young woman as she hurries through the early morning darkness to take her place in line for a historic appearance of Barack Obama and Joe Biden. As she relates this tale, she knows all the changes and advances that we have made since those heady days . . . And she still feels the thrill, the momentum, and the tingle of that day. It has helped to carry her forth on her life's journey, as it is carrying all of us along to a better world . . . People have heard this woman's tale before, but they never tire of hearing it- the day she was touched by greatness, and the story of the wonderful odyssey we have all taken since then . . .

Surf this wave into your future.

By The Way- How was your reunion?

It will be SO nice to finally have two well-respected men representing our country to the rest of the world.

"Elegant, poised, stately, clever and charming"

will replace

"smug, arrogant, mean-spirited, vicious and dumb"

as the executive branch adjectives.

100. You're very welcome.
I have decided to take what I wrote and put in photo album along with the pictures I took. And the closing pages will be the newspaper headline on the morning of November 4 and the photos from the papers on January 21 showing Obama and Biden being sworn into office. I want to keep this day as a keepsake for my children and grandchildren, the day that I shook hands with history.

And good for you- standing and waiting that long
to finally meet them

Your story made my day- ;-)

That, and

My boyfriend and I finally drove to So.Orange County to get some Obama/Biden signs,
as the Obama store is backlogged, bigtime!

I found the Laguna Beach Democratic Party office, got my signs and
stickers and gave them a donation.

While crossing Pacific Coast Highway to get to my boyfriend's car, SEVERAL people
honked, waved and yelled "Yes We Can!" out their car windows at me.

He put his bumper sticker on right there and we were getting cheers and high fives
from people walking by.

It was sooo cool- not as cool as your experience but,

as a Democrat in Orange County, CA-
( Repub Central)
IT WAS VERY COOL!

I'm still smiling.

:) :pals:

I've been sick since Thursday and missed too much work to take another day off. But I know he will be back, and I pray I will have the Press credentials to get to speak to him ....
(I got to meet Bill Clinton in 98 while covering him ans Al Gore at the Environmental Summitt at Lake Tahoe...it was super powerful, I know that feeling of joy and recognition)

But I think Obama is even more different than Bill as the Rock Star,
Obama has a charisma about him, but not an arogance.
He is so cool and rockin, but also peaceful - like a modern day Gahndi with a rockin soundtrack!

Good for you for sticking it out! thanks for the story, I am blessed because of your sharing

It was my sarcastic attempt at humor from an experience I had with heart-throb Robert Redford decades ago. I apologize if it came out badly. I think my sarcasm is funny, yet not many folks agree. Of course it's all in my mind's viewpoint. Kinda like Bob Newhart's humor.
