Bumper sticker shaped like bandaid with a purple heart in the middle ...
...with your choice of these words:

"This is NO Joke"
or
"War is NO Joke"

I need help as I possess NO graphic skills.

TIA

2. This is a dumb idea.
If it`s wrong for Republicans to use bandaids with purple hearts it`s wrong for anyone else, no matter what the rest of the message reads.

9. I disagree. The Repubs are using it in a sarcastic context.
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:53 PM by MercutioATC
Dems would be using it to call attention to that insensitivity. There's a definite difference.

I do think the idea needs work to get the message across, though.

Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:35 PM by sangh0
It might be interpreted as a message to Kerry that PH's are serious, and shouldn't be messed with.

But your basic premise is spot on. I just think it might help to make it a bit clearer to those who know about the SBVT, but may not know about the band-aids at the convention.

5. As a graphic designer, I'd rethink that one...
I think the message is ambiguous.

You're effectively agreeing with the Band-Aid clowns by implying that Kerry's supposed fake PHs are 'no joke'.

I like the other idea in the thread...

Why does Bush hate the military?

That's something I've heard time and time again, and think that's a message that could hit homer. Just asking the question is enough!

... or more succinctly: "Bush thinks war is a joke?"

Thousands dead. How many more? The GOP laughs at the wounded.

10. But it'd have to have a "Kerry/Edwards" thing on it, too.
Otherwise, people might think the statement was that Kerry didn't deserve his Purple Hearts.

13. ambiguity could be a problem
I could just as easily see Blackwell giving out those bumperstickers to promote his little joke. No need for us to spread the meme too, IMHO.

I'll be going to see Max tomorrow - I'll see if I can get a good photo and play around with it Friday. I think the UB needs to be on the left because of the direction she's facing - it feels unbalanced when she's facing off the edge of the page.

24. Bad idea, very bad idea - Dems and vets took offense to the
band aid - have bashed the repukes for being insensitive and for belittling the purple heart and Kerry's service - why do you want to perpetuate the insensitivity. Ask the vets, Bandit and matcom and the others - they will tell you this sucks.

DO NOT MOCK the purple heart - not in mocking their hate - not for any reason. It is hypocrisy to bash them and then to create and use the same mockery they used.

You want to do something, then do the pabst blue ribbon for * or a blank photo with the caption "GWB in Alabama NG 1972" - do not mess with the purple heart.

Bandit
I've decided I'm sending mine back..Purple Hearts and the rest
I have a few medals from Vietnam Service including two purple hearts and many other awards including three V Devices. I had planned on passing them down to my grandchildren but my eleven years old grandson just told me soldiers from Vietnam didn't deserve their medals. He said all his friends are telling him that. I have my scars to remind me so I don't need any of the medals. They are meaningless to my grandchildren so they are meaningless to me as well. I just am not sure where to send them. Should I send them to my Republican Senator or the Media or to the pResident. The trouble with sending them to the Whitehouse is they will just toss them and it will be a meaningless gesture. I am leaning toward sending them to Ted Stevens

I can't see how be any part of that mockery could be beneficial, a bumper sticker is just a bigger band aid, just a larger slap in the face! IMHO

"Purple Heart" Band-aids a Mockery of service

A Statement from Thomas H. Corey, National President, Vietnam Veterans of America

(Washington, D.C.) – Vietnam Veterans of America has received reports of delegates at the Republican National Convention disseminating and wearing "Purple Heart" band-aids in mockery of one of nation’s most distinctive honors, the Purple Heart medal.

The Purple Heart is one of the oldest military awards, first introduced in 1782 by Gen. George Washington to honor the service and sacrifice of the common soldier and recognize the spirit of volunteerism and selfless dedication. It was reinstated in 1932. The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the armed forces who are wounded by the enemy.

The spirit of the award recognizes the personal sacrifice of our troops without regard to the severity or nature of the wound. It is the wounding itself that merits the honor. To demean the decoration and the sacrifice it symbolizes demeans all veterans and the patriots who honor them.

With our nation’s sons and daughters at war to protect global freedom, demeaning military service in this way is especially hurtful. Vietnam Veterans of America urges all Americans to decry this type of outrageous, disrespectful, and infantile behavior.

###

Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA) is the nation's only congressionally chartered veterans service organization dedicated to the needs of Vietnam-era veterans and their families. VVA's founding principle is “Never again will one generation of veterans abandon another.”
