Wow, that is an impressive and decisive lead. So much for all the contorted arguments invented by people here. I think the bailout has hurt McCain, perhaps irreparably.

The political education of America is terrible. I see that even in people I know are otherwise very smart. Obama promises more to the people, and that’s all a lot of them need to know. Sadly.

It's not the bailout. It's the financial crisis. That lays on the doorstep of Bush and the Republicans. And it may not be fixable in a month.

The United States has officially jumped the shark. Although there is a very large Obama number from Thursday that will drop off tomorrow, this number looks like Obama still won Saturday significantly (around 47-40).

Actually, I really like the Heritage Foundation’s Leadership for America campaign. I don’t know if it’ll work, but it’s the right idea. We’re reaching the point where conservatives will not be able to win elections even if we all get behind our candidates. Our problem is more basic than that. We need to reteach Americans about the philosophical principles that this nation was built on, and why they are the best.

The problem here is that people blame the politicians that have been in power for this mess.

Rational or not, McCain is part of the Washington establishment so he gets the blame.

People are in an UGLY mood. They want CHANGE and are not rational enough to discern good change from bad change.

“Is this that “registered voters” crap, again?”

Yes, it’s registered voters. And Gallup weights their results, but unlike Rasmussen, Gallup does not publish how they manipulate the data.

Wizbang analysis of Gallup poll from a week ago:
“So, put it all together, and in the past week Obama has stayed steady or lost support in every party identification group, yet Gallup says his overall support went up four points. And McCain stayed steady or went up in every party identification group, yet we are supposed to accept the claim that his overall support went down by four points? Anyone have an answer for how that is even possible?

Well, actually I do. There is one, and only one, possible way that such a thing can happen mathematically. And that way, is that Gallup made major changes to the political affiliation weighting from the last week to now. Gallup has significantly increased the proportional weight of Democrat response and reduced the weight of Republican response. Bear in mind that this assumes that people change the foundation of their political opinion like a showgirl changes costumes, which has no scientific basis or historical support whatsoever.”

Another FReeper posted yesterday that Gallup's 3 day rolling average had:
Wed: McCain 46, Obama 44%
Thurs: McCain 39%, Obama 56%
Fri: McCain 47%, Obama 47%

If true, then today's Gallup still has Thursday's OUTLIER included in the 3 day rolling average: Thurs, Fri, Saturday. Tomorrow's Gallup sould be more interesting without Thursday's huge outlier.

They have successfully covered up Obama’s marxist past, totally glossed over Rev. Wright anti-Americanism and racism and have the people brainwashed into believing that this whole Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac mess is the fault of the Republicans.

Obama is like teflon. We’re going to lose this election.

The Dems and Paulson (another Dem) have known this economic showdown was coming for nearly a year. The bill was concocted by them for just when they decided it should hit. They couldn't stop Palin so they pulled the trigger in Sept.

Well, Rasmussen and Gallup both showed Obama pulling away immediately after McCain suspended his campaign (in which he also pulled his ads).

As for the debate, the Sheeple may just be so pissed off with Republicans that all Obama had to do come ahead is not piss all over himself.

At this point, the media’s narrative will turn to Obama’s “big lead”. Any attack by McCain will be framed as “desperation.”

Still not over by a long shot.

There is something seriously wrong with this poll. The breakdown shows "pure independents" breaking for McCain by 4-6% more each time a new poll comes out.
The LIBS break left and the CONS break right has remained steady.

Since we cannot see the sample breakdown we need to adjust for oversampling of RATS by the Rass % of 6-9 pts.

McCain needs to stress that without SECURITY (a position he is well favored) there will be no ECONOMY ( a poition that he trails in)

It looks like the “experience” angle isn’t the right tactic for either the Republicans or the Democrats - it simply hasn’t worked against either Obama or Palin. The McCain campaign hasn’t effectively tied Obama and the Democrats to the subprime mortgage crisis and somehow this Democratic mess is now associated in the minds of the public with the Republicans - incredible.

The trend has been all Obama the last 2 weeks. McCain was up about 3 points 2 weeks ago. even a week ago, and now down 6-8 points. Athough I don’t think Obama truly has a 6-8 point lead, or will carry that through Nov, it is not great right now.

It is hard to believe when the dems were 80% responsible for this financial crisis, that McCain is getting the blame. Bush and McCain have been calling for reform of the financial system since 2002. They have sponsored hearings and bills. The democrats have said for 8 years, there is no crisis. This is all clearly documented. Yet Bush/McCain get the blame.

We have got to get a bailout bill signed to calm the markets. That will relieve some of the fear Americans have right now. Also, it will allow McCain and the 527’s to go on attack to show who really caused this mess. Until the financial news if off the radar screen, McCain cannot get his messages out.

Keep the faith everyone. We still have 5 weeks to go, and that is a long time in politics. I remember in 2000 around 7:40pm on election night, thinking it was over when they called Florida for Gore. But things have a way of working out. In my heart, I just cannot believe that America will elect the most liberal inexperienced politician of the last 100 years.

I've been trying to warn folks, but to no avail.
Nobama had to meet a certain threshold, but most here are too partisan to see he met it. After the last 8 years, that bar has been lowered. The economy sucks, and a lot of people don't like this war.

Nobama spoke well without a teleprompter. He articulated the liberal view pretty well, and unless a miracle happens, I think people are going to vote for that liberal view.

We need to be out canvassing our neighborhoods and manning the phones instead of talking here.

In my case, I'm in a very red state, so I'm emailing everyone I know who lives in blue states making the very best case I can make. I'm going to see if I can work phone banks to other states.

Exactly. Independents were looking only at 'body language'--and NOT at the issues or what was spoken.

That is precisely why I think these 'so-called' debates are a joke--because the gulf between the parties has never been bigger....

and who does better at 'performance art'--should have very little to do with who is elected. Sad. Very sad.

The Sheeple may vote for Obama. If they do, I place most of the blame on the Republican party. The stupid party has allowed the Democrats to set the agenda and have for the past 8 years played nice. Obama and company are not interested in playing nice-they want to win to obtain power and control of our lives.
It's not over-we have 2 more debates between McCain and Obama and we have debate between Palin and Biden. We also have the NRA ads coming. I am not optimistic but I am not ready to concede.
Also, like many Freepers, I now only give time and money to conservative candidates. I hung up on a caller from the Maine Republican Party the other day. I am nice guy but I have had it with the Republican Party, local, state, and national

A former pres of the Harvard Law Review and a constitutional law professor at a major institution is a "dumbhead." I really don't know what to say about that. I can't fathom someone's ability to delude themselves that drastically.

And that Marxist theme is just hysterical.

And... the issues? Most people AGREE with Obama on the issues - the only thing he had to overcome was that incessant "is he presidential enough" question, which was never a question for me.

They are genuinely braindead, not a single active neuron in evidence.

"We need to reteach Americans about the philosophical principles that this nation was built on, and why they are the best."

They are actually calling for re-education camps!

If you reteach Americans those principles, the GOP has it exists today would fade out of existence.

22. Got to love this: "Republicans in general, and McCain in particlar, ...
are not hitting Obama hard enough on who he is, who his friends are,"

I really like this for several reasons. Do you want to go there? Because we have McCain's little friends in the Keating 5, we have Rick Davis----running around ad nauseum. We have a crazy witch hunting priest for Governor Palin. I'd love to get into a debate on friends. They should have held on to Rev. Wright in hiding until now. Obama managed to clear the air and people sort of forgot that drama.

Bring it up and we'll bring up the others. As far as who he is? McCain voted on torture, he voted always against Vets, he doesn't believe in social welfare programs, he thinks the fundamentals of our economy is good and believes in excessive troop force to the point of reinstating the draft. Yet, this is all well and good?!

Not for the logically thinking American people.

If this is true then we will have elected a Marxist for president and we can be expected to be carted off to the gulags and reeducation camps. Let's face it, history is NOT on our side.

Historically, if the economy is bad ( as it is now ), the incumbent President's party tends to lose.

Ford lost to Carter because of the 1974-75 recession. Carter lost to Reagan because of the 70's stagflation. Bush sr. lost to the slimeball slick one because of the 1991 recession. Gore lost to Bush Jr because of the Dot Com bubble.

Ask yourself, where are we in right now economically ?

It wasn't just body language and performance - people are mad about the war, and mad about the economy, and when that happens, the incumbent party generally loses.

And when Palin debates Biden the gaffer, it will get worse. Biden has a way of putting his foot in his mouth on stupid stuff like FDR and the television set, but he will still know more about his liberal view point than Palin will and he will be able to articulate that pretty well. Palin is going to be a bundle of nerves. Speaking in front of fifty million people without a teleprompter would scare the SHIT out of me! LOL

Wait until next Monday's polls. Then, we'll really know how much work we have to do. Do we have a group here willing to work in a swing state? My state is already red, so I might go to Louisiana. I think it's still in the "maybe" category.

The text below from today's Gallup release would tend to make me believe that the current 3 day rolling average does include a rather large Obama day as some are guessing because they point that Obama maintained a lead in yesterday's polling is all that they say. Having said that, IF this does not go down by multiple points in the next couple days then it is truly worrisome regardless of likely voter vs. registered, Bradley effect, etc.

The full impact of the debate and its aftermath will not be reflected in the tracking data until Tuesday's report, which will be based on interviewing conducted Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. Still, Gallup's one-day read on the standing of the two candidates on Saturday suggests that Obama held the lead over McCain among registered voters that night, just as he had for the two previous nights.

Come on, man, be reasonable. You are not going to change the facts by yelling or increasing font size. If it is any comfort to you, know that you are not alone, and I know you mean well. Unfortunately, these are exactly the kinds of responses that well-meaning and overly optimistic people made here in the early fall of 2006. In fact, they used some of the same rationalizations.

I know a Congressional election is not the same as a Presidential election, but I just want to remind everyone of this.

Denying reality will not alter reality. There is no way there is a double digit gap between registered and likely voters, especially in a year when the Democrats have more enthusiasm.

You can make a different argument, a more plausible one, which is that we still have more than a month to go, and things can change. However, please do not deny that if the election were held today, Obama would win easily.

It will take about 5 days to get a new read. Wall Street will fall off the radar screen and the big sampling nights for Obama will roll off.

But make no mistake. McCain has lost 5-7% of his support, and it didn’t come off the far right. Only the middle is willing to change their minds. He has to win the middle back, mostly women, and that means health care, the economy and oil (which he could tie to Iraq).

No red meat for the right. Those are not the votes that flipped.

As discouraging as this news is, I will not let it disuade me from my beliefs, values, and love for my country. Much can and will happen over the next few weeks and we can only control so much of it. McCain is a great campaigner and I know he will not give up. This election isn’t over yet.

Now, should the worst happen and should Obama be elected, it will not be the end of this country. I am so sick of hearing the mantra from the left and I can’t stand hearing it from the right. The left has bitched and moaned for 8 years about President Bush. If they think they can do better, have at it. The American people will be watching. So go get ‘em Dems, give it your best shot.

As I said before, the election isn’t over. Did you really think McCain was just gonna skate into the Whitehouse? The idea is foolish. If he wants it he needs to fight for it and so do we.

The DBM and the Dems, blamed McCain for stopping the original bill, a POS that 80% of the public was against.

How’s that a loser for McCain?

>> "So Obama won Saturday 47-40. Hell, that’s still +7."

Damn, you're right. I hadn't done the math, but that does put Obama at +7 for Saturday. Ouch!!! What is wrong with America!

Why is it not seen as the Democrats and the evil Bush are in alignment on this one? Each for their own reasons.

Puke me.

It’s a loser if he then supports THIS bailout—as if the difference between the two is really THAT big!!!!

Don't you have a feale relative you can get hysterical with?

>> McCain's only mistake this week was asking to suspend the debate

No kidding.

I got into my car just as they were going to a commercial and all I heard was...."suspending campaign and canceling the debate", and I thought, "Alright....Obama's chickening out and will look like a coward trying to duck McCain!"

Then after the break....."Uh oh".

>> “they vote ONLY ONE ISSUE—THEIR POCKETBOOKS!!!”

Then expect all the polls to swing the other way after the next debate. PORKER OBAMA has no defense for his enormous spending. How can he explain spending $950 million in taxpayer’s money on his special little projects? That is the kind of stuff that flames out the working people.

>> However, please do not deny that if the election were held today, Obama would win easily.

I for one do NOT believe that even today Obama would win this election easily. It is hard to argue that he wouldn't win if it were held today, but I still think it would be pretty close for various reasons:

* He is black (can't be ignored for some impact)
* Even one of the most favorable polls to Obama post debate still had a 12% advantage to McCain on who is more ready to be President. I think that there will still be some voting booth conversions to McCain on this point.
* I think that Christians are going to come out in greater numbers than some think due to abortion and quite frankly the rumors of his Muslim faith.

So my 2 cents, which isn't worth much I realize, is that IF McCain can even be right at the margin of error in final pre-election polls then there is a chance of him pulling it out. Yes, I would be terrified if all polls showed at least a small Obama lead at the end, but not out of the question to win if in that range. The current state does not appear to have it right at that range though, so he probably would win if held today.

Well if the GOP was out there every minute slamming the Democrats on it then we would be at least at parity if not ahead but this gentleman not going to politicize the bailout crap when the Democrats who created this mess are blaming the GOP falsely. I’m tired of the gutless suit and tie GOP. I’m tired. I’m proud of our Congressional Republicans but we need to turn this around and I don’t give a damn how we do it. We need to be in Obama’s face any chance we can. We need to be in the face of the Press any chance we get. We need a 527 dedicated to hitting the Democrats on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Why we don’t have anything is crazy. We haven’t lost this. We have plenty of time to get things back where they should be but this battle is not going to be won by pretending everything is fine.

Then McCain can stop this one, too.

No bailout will pass until and unless McCain says so.

According to my non-political, in college daughter, a vote for the big ZERO is a wasted vote cuz he may not be around long after being elected. I guess this is what is being tossed around at her Calif. school.

65. Are we counting Louisiana as a swing state?
'Cause it sounds like they are...

"Do we have a group here willing to work in a swing state? My state is already red, so I might go to Louisiana. I think it's still in the "maybe" category."

66. 9/11, 9/11, 9/11
P.S. Heck, the WOT isn't even a major factor now to many people--it's like 9/11 never happened. Sigh.

No, you idiot. We all know it happened, but we haven't figured out how invading a sovereign nation that had nothing to do with 9/11 was appropriate. We haven't figured out why they haven't captured bin Laden. However, we have figured out that spending trillions of dollars on a war that isn't necessary is breaking America's economy.

62. I am so confused. What kind of policies are they accusing Obama of promoting?
Fascism or Marxism? Our educational system has certainly failed this group if they think those philosophies are interchangeable.

These poor little boys. Some of them actually think they will be carted off to a gulag if he wins? What a sad sad thing that is.
