County party marks a milestone; 47 percent growth since 2000 Steve Williams just wanted to get a voter registration form for his son Jonathan. But while the Willow Street man was at county Democratic headquarters, he found that he had been purged from the rolls for missing a few elections. So the elder Williams filled out a form, too.
He turned out to be the 100,000th Democrat to do that.
"I should play the lottery," Williams joked.
Democrats introduced their prize recruit at a press conference Saturday, celebrating the party's remarkable growth over the last decade.
Williams was actually re-upping. The Lancaster County native has been a Democrat pretty much all his adult life. And he's amazed at the way the local party has changed over the years.
"It's unbelievable," he said.
For veteran Democrats, indeed it is.
In 2000, there were 67,932 Democrats in the county. As of Thursday, there were 100,406. The party has recorded the fastest growth of any large county in Pennsylvania in the last two years.
And the Republican registration edge, once more than 3-1, is now 1.8-1.
"The dramatic growth of the Democratic Party, contrasted with the stagnation of the local Republican Party, is the most significant political story in Lancaster County in this decade," county Democratic Chairman Bruce Beardsley said.
"Since 2000, we have gained over 32,000 voters, while the Republicans gained less than 8,000. To characterize this as merely a cyclical adjustment is the same heads-in-the-sand mentality that has brought this nation to the brink of economic disaster."
