George W. Bush's missing year

George W. Bush's missing year
The widow of a Bush family confidant says her husband gave the future president an Alabama Senate campaign job as a favor to his worried father. Did they see him do any National Guard service? "Good lord, no."

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Mary Jacoby

Sept. 2, 2004 | NEW YORK -- Before there was Karl Rove, Lee Atwater or even James Baker, the Bush family's political guru was a gregarious newspaper owner and campaign consultant from Midland, Texas, named Jimmy Allison. In the spring of 1972, George H.W. Bush phoned his friend and asked a favor: Could Allison find a place on the Senate campaign he was managing in Alabama for his troublesome eldest son, the 25-year-old George W. Bush?

"The impression I had was that Georgie was raising a lot of hell in Houston, getting in trouble and embarrassing the family, and they just really wanted to get him out of Houston and under Jimmy's wing," Allison's widow, Linda, told me. "And Jimmy said, 'Sure.' He was so loyal."

Linda Allison's story, never before published, contradicts the Bush campaign's assertion that George W. Bush transferred from the Texas Air National Guard to the Alabama National Guard in 1972 because he received an irresistible offer to gain high-level experience on the campaign of Bush family friend Winton "Red" Blount. In fact, according to what Allison says her late husband told her, the younger Bush had become a political liability for his father, who was then the United States ambassador to the United Nations, and the family wanted him out of Texas. "I think they wanted someone they trusted to keep an eye on him," Linda Allison said.

Snip

You will need a day pass for the rest.

For starters these stories are coming from people who have nothing at all to gain by coming forward. And never mind the fact that they are very likely true. Don't let that get in the way.

24. The Swift Bloat Liars are saying that the
official war record is untrue. Kerry's account of his service is in exact accord with his own crew members and the official records. The Swift Liars have been discredited completely.

The stories coming out by the people you listed are of 'lacuni' that neither bush nor the record can account for. The people coming forward were actual witnesses who were actually there. It is all the difference in the world, but to a large number of the dumbed-down bush supporters no amount of truth and evidence is enough if their 'god' says otherwise. Fucking sickening!

versus DOCUMENTED LIES from persons WHO WEREN'T EVEN THERE.

Other than these small facts, the SVB lies could be considered comparable to the truth I guess!

2. Ben Barnes will be on 60 Minutes
telling how he got AWOL into TANG. The very next day on the campaign stump Kerry should publicly challenge AWOL to tell us all why he missed a year in the guard. We have the facts and truth on our side. this will open up a whole can of worms about his drug use. Is it hardball? Yeah but the truth gives us the highground.

18. the only way they cover it is if jk himself call awol out
the kerry camp needs to gather all the docs, all the affadavits, all the records and ll of bush's statements into a neat package for media comsumption. dot all i's - cross all t's. then have jk himself say that he didn't want to do it but the sbl's have forced his hand. the media loves the conflict and the ball will be in the b/c 04 court and they won't respond effectively. why? because the facts are real bad for them that's why and no amount of fox news spin can change the facts.

29. I think everyone's trying to get in there at once. Once you spend maybe 10
or 15 minutes waiting, you'll see it's worth it!

I think the part you're stuck with is the commercial you're supposed to witness BEFORE you can get to the article. It's going astoundingly slow. I've NEVER seen it operating like this before, and I've gone in several times when DU'ers found important articles.

You stick with the commercial, and eventually you'll see a "next" or something which will gradually appear and you'll be lead to the story.

Please don't miss this. It's pure cool, clear water to some of us who have been wandering in the desert too long!

91. the "Texas souffle"
from the Guardian article:

"But then no one understood why he brought this young guy from Texas along. It was like, 'Who was this guy who comes in late and leaves early? And why would Jimmy Allison, who was so impressive, bring him on?'"

Reminded me of this article: George W. Bush's Lost Year in 1972 Alabama By Glynn Wilson

Bush also made an impression on the "Blue-Haired Platoon," a group of older Republican Women working for Blount. Behind his back they called him "the Texas soufflé," Archibald said, because he was "all puffed up and full of hot air."

32. Not sure about that, but Allison owned the newpaper in Midland, Texas
and he was the chairman of the Texas Republican Party, if I got my facts straight from the article.

Since W didn't have anything real to do, it would have left him a LOT of time, wouldn't it? It's not as if he had used the time to do research, or go back to school, or do something helping people, God forbid.

You had that right and I was wrong.

Apparently a person by the last name of Gow owned the agricultural company that stupid went and aquired "tropical plants" for.

It would have been in 1971 right before his stint at project PULL.

25. This part says it all...
"Leaving the election-night "celebration," Allison remembers encountering George W. Bush in the parking lot, urinating on a car, and hearing later about how he'd yelled obscenities at police officers that night. Bush left a house he'd rented in Montgomery trashed -- the furniture broken, walls damaged and a chandelier destroyed, the Birmingham News reported in February. "He was just a rich kid who had no respect for other people's possessions," Mary Smith, a member of the family who rented the house, told the newspaper, adding that a bill sent to Bush for repairs was never paid."

riding his bike so slowly back and forth in front of his mom's car, as she tried to drive, so slowly that he had to put down his foot to keep from tipping over, just to get on her nerves to be unbelievably odd.

ODD, you hear? TWENTY SIX YEARS OLD. Still attached to Mommy. Throwing a tiny tantrum when she did something he didn't like. In front of her friend.

Creepy man. Good to know this jackass is squatting in the White House.

the kind of "Mommy Dearest" reptile who deserved that kind of treatment from her son.

Jesus, what a stain this family is on the land. I don't which one is more hideous than the others. But overall, Barbara "my beautiful mind" Bush comes across as the scariest.

I soooooooo want to join fellow DU'ers and do the moonwalk down Constitution Avenue while there celebrating Kerry's inauguration. Put a fork in Chimpy. He's done. This article is chocked full of eyewitnesses to Bush's "troubling" behavior, particularly dear Mrs. Allison who shows us there are still decent republicans with a conscience. Rove has made a huge tactical error. :D

55. By their fruits, ye shall know them.
The "Bushies" don't seem to realize what a dysfunctional family they are and how abnormal Bush's behavior was when he was in his early 20's. Apparently, he was so emotionally immature as to have been emotionally disabled. They should be embarrassed to be putting themselves forward in public.

I have two daughters in their mid to late twenties. We talk almost every day and have a wonderful family relationship. I trust them completely, and I know they love me. I feel the same way toward my own mom.

When I saw the twins at the Convention, it seemed to me that the only lines they could deliver authentically, as if they believed them and felt them in their hearts, expressed hostility and disappointment in their parents. How sick! Those girls would have been better off having parents who were emotionally capable of loving them than having all that money and social standing.

Compare Kerry's daughters. They have character -- good souls. They are whole. Just like their dad. I bet their mom is a wonderful person also. The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Contrast and Compare America...

bush* = spoiled loser bailed out by poopy his whole life

John Kerry = A WAR HERO showing Courage, Strength, Honesty, Responsiblity.....

<snip>While Kerry earned a Silver Star and a Bronze Star after saving a crewmate's life under fire on the Mekong River in Vietnam, by contrast, the Georgie that Allison knew was a young man whose parents did not allow him to live with the consequences of his own mistakes. His powerful father -- whom the son seemed to both idolize and resent -- was a lifeline for Bush out of predicaments. After Bush graduated from Yale in 1968, his slot in the Texas Air National Guard allowed him to avoid active duty service in Vietnam. The former speaker of the Texas state House, Democrat Ben Barnes, now admits he pulled strings to get Bush his coveted guard slot, and says he's "ashamed" of the deed. "60 Minutes" will air an interview with Barnes next Wednesday, but George H.W. Bush denounced Barnes' claims in an interview aired on CBS. "They keep saying that and it's a lie, a total lie. Nobody's come up with any evidence, and yet it's repeated all the time," the former president said, in what could just as well describe the playbook for the Swift Boat Veterans ads.

Yet, after receiving unusual permission to transfer to the Alabama Guard from Texas, Bush has produced no evidence he showed up for service for anything other than a dental exam. Later, Bush would trade on his father's connections to enter the oil business, and when his ventures failed, trade on more connections to find investors to bail him out. Linda Allison's story fills in the details about a missing chapter in the story of how George Bush Sr.'s friends helped his wastrel son. The Bush campaign, decamped to New York for the convention, did not return a phone call by late Wednesday.

This last line is Pricelss...

<snip>
Linda Allison watches it all from her New York apartment. About George W. Bush's disputed sojourn in Alabama, she asks simply: "Can we all be lying?"

... Indeed Linda!

God, he's such typical spoiled rich brat who's taken credit for anything and accountability for nothing. Just like we all do now over the Nazis. Maybe * does have to be elected to 4 more years for this country to sink to the bottom so that we can at last start going up. I hope not, but I keep thinking how far do we have to sink for people to wake up to the fact the the Republicans are mindless assholes who don't give a shit about anybody but themselves? Everytime I ask myself how bad do things have to get, they get a little worse. It must be a pendulum that will eventually swing back to sanity. I just hope it's sooner rather than later.

69. DRUNK BUSH VIDEO CLIP....if you haven't seen it go to this link
If George W. Bush ends up in the White House, The Smoking Gun would like to be the first web outfit to formally offer Dubya an artifact for his future presidential library. The Republican's wacky performance in this 1992 wedding video excerpt--shot years after Bush went cold turkey in July 1986--needs to be preserved for future generations.
The video was shot at the August 29, 1992 wedding of Jamie Weiss, the daughter of Dubya's close friends Mike and Nancy Weiss. Mike, a Lubbock, Texas lawyer and CPA, was Bush's campaign chairman during his first political race (an unsuccessful 1978 congressional bid) and was one of the Texas governor's earliest political appointments. Nancy, also a Bush appointee, had a prime speaking slot on the final night of the Republican convention. She told the crowd, "I wish you could see how he reaches out to people, teasing those who can take it and protecting those who can't."

Indeed, what a teaser!

When cameraman T. Patrick Murray filmed Bush during the wedding reception at a Lubbock country club, the future governor took some rambling--and we presume good-natured--swipes at the newlyweds, the bride's parents, and her brother Kelly (Bush was being quizzed by a member of the bridal party). We love the part where teetotaler George actually disses two of the Weisses for supposedly not drinking or smoking. And as for those weird Don King-like "only in America" cracks--not to mention what's in that glass--your guess is as good as TSG's.

We have one more eyewitness account of someone who never knew that Bush was supposed to be serving in the ANG.

"Allison's account corroborates a Washington Post investigation in February that found no credible witnesses to the service in the Alabama National Guard that Bush maintains he performed, despite a lack of documentary evidence. Asked if she'd ever seen Bush in a uniform, Allison said: "Good lord, no. I had no idea that the National Guard was involved in his life in any way." "

This is not a smoking gun. What we need is someone in the ANG to say he was AWOL. This account is not going to win the election for John Kerry.

Jewish girl.. I think Babs & Poppy put the kibosh on it and that may have been what set him off.. Look at the trouble in the UK that resulted from Charles not being able to marry Camilla when they were both 19 or 20..

I also think that the "halted flying status" might have been from someone ratting him out on his using TANG planes to "ferry tropical plants" from Acola Fla to the "agricultural company" in Texas.. I would imagine that the military would frown on that..one of his MANY pals (all invisible) dropped a dime on him.. He was quoted as saying that he took his brother with him sometimes...

How many "plants" would even fit into the kind of plane that he supposedly flew???.

His pal Bath probably did the same and they both got busted..

What if those "plants" were found to be something more than decorative plants, and they were busted for ferrying drugs instead...??

And if you need links for any of these stories, just head on over to http://www.awolbush.com ...

Editor,

Given all the recent smearing of John Kerry's military service in Vietnam, it might be appropriate to take a fresh look at the details of George Bush's service during that same time period. Recently, it has come to light that:

1) Despite frequent Bush denials that political connections landed him a coveted pilot slot in the Texas Air National Guard, former TX Lieutenant Governor Ben Barnes is now coming forward to say he did exactly that - at the request of Sid Adger, a Bush family friend.

2) Researchers have discovered that George Bush was photographed in his uniform wearing a ribbon (the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award) that he never earned - a photograph that is still displayed on his father's presidential library web site.

3) Linda Allison, former Bush family friend and widow of the man George W. Bush worked for on that campaign in Alabama, was recently asked if either she or her husband ever saw Bush perform any Guard duty in Alabama. Her response? "Good lord, no."

4) The Justice Department has recently told the Associated Press that there are no more of Bush's military records to release - meaning that a full year of Bush's purported "service" remains completely unaccounted for. This, in a military bureaucracy well-known for reams and reams of administrative paperwork to keep track of its personnel and their service.

5) An independent investigator (Paul Lukasiak) recently looked into the period after Bush was suspended as a pilot, and has found that the Air Force classified Bush as a "non-locatee" - which should have

For Republicans - like George "AWOL" Bush and Dick "Five Student Deferments" Cheney - to assail John Kerry's war records seems like a new height for Republican hypocrisy. Shame on them.
