Historical Question? How many candidates ran and lost the primaries, and then
won their primaries years later, and then won the presidency?

I know that Nixon ran, but he was his party's nominee...and then lost to JFK.
Then ran again and won.

But I'm asking about the position that McCain is in.

4. Misread the question. nt.
I don't think that any other dems have ever even won the nomination.

6. Reagan in '76 and '80
Bush the elder ran in '80 against Reagan, but I don't know if being VP counts, strictly...and Al Gore ran in 1988 and would have won in 2000 if not for the Supreme Court, but he was another VP; I don't think anyone who didn't have an interim term as VP has done it other than Reagan
