1. "We don't really like Obama, but we don't want another Bush"
Honestly, thats pretty much it.

4. Agreed
Obama would be the first President younger than the Baby Boomers, its a big step to have that happen. I'm 52, and I remembered what a jarring thing it was to be treated by a doctor who was visibly younger, or pulled over by a cop that was ten years my junior. That fear may be expressed as "lack of experience".

Let's face it, McLame might have those parental vibes that many people look for in an elected leader. We have to help people overcome those fears.

6. Good point
Although Obama does not project immaturity, and McCain is no father figure, so I'm optimistic on this point.

11. My take, and I may be completely off base here,
is that there is some residual racism among these types. It's not overt, but deep inside they're not convinced they can vote for a black man. What I think they need to see is other white people supporting Obama, so that they can feel better about voting for him. That's why I think it's particularly important in this election to have your support of Obama in full display. That's what I've done, and I hope it will convince a few of these people to go blue.

Not really sure why I feel this way - guess it's just a hunch.

5. I think a lot of people just don't want to say who they vote for
I've been canvassing for a while and came to this conclusion reading body language and facial expressions.

The more you ask the more they clam up.

23. To expand a bit....
These people are on a bus that's going over a cliff....give them a choice....

Do they stay on, or do they pull the cord and demand to be let off?

hmmm....what to do, what to do....

They're crossing the street against a red light and a car is headed straight for them...do they stand there and take the hit, or do they hotfoot it to the other side?

oh my...what to do, what to do...

"I can't decide!!!! wahhhh wahhhhh!"

sigh...it's a wonder they've survived as long as they have...

13. My experience as well, even among uncommitted registered Dems.
Edited on Tue Sep-30-08 08:07 AM by blondeatlast
I can tell the ones with hidden racism pretty easily by now; they DON'T want to talk but the body language speaks volumes.

"Can you just please leave already?" is the vibe I always get form the hidden racist Dems. My experience with Indies is they lean Obama and are anxious to talk or are pretty openly hostile; very little middle ground and it's about 50/50.

They tend pretty universally not to like McCain though; I wonder if they will stay home.

26. If they don't want to say...
then they don't have to...but my question is...why do they play head games?

Why can't they just say, "Yes, I've made a choice, but I'd rather not tell which one I'm voting for"

Or even, "Yeah, I chose...and it's none of your fucking business"

I think either answer is better than looking stupid this close to the election by saying, "Gee, golly...I just don't know..."

Bleh.

:puke:

PS...something I just thought of...maybe these people haven't even registered to vote...maybe they just SAY they have and then claim they're undecided just to get out of looking "unpatriotic"....

Maybe they'd rather look stupid than un-American...

7. I was canvassing the other day,
In a fairly affluent hood -

A few people seem to be in the 'I'd rather save a couple grand in taxes, while watching more soldiers die' crowd.

But even in this area, the affluent WIVES were leaning Obama, while the husbands stayed McCain.

Everyone over 65 who claimed 'undecided' was lying. :)

15. Would you mind PMing me the area? I'm just really curious.
I'm in District 6 doing the new developments south of Carefree Highway east of I-17. I expected we'd have more Democrats out here than we do--I suspect many aren't registered at all.

I live in the area I'm canvassing, too.

they don't really like McCain either. They're torn, understandably so. Obama can appeal to them though.

16. Lots of charitable answers here...
I think most of the "undecideds" have barely registered that it's an election year, and just don't give a shit. (Not in all cases necessarily, but in plenty.)

17. Don't know. Anyone undecided at this point is someone whose
brain is like a blank screen.

They have to be people don't give a shit about democracy.

some of them may be smart, just so into their jobs that they don't care about he big picture. Very self centered people, they have to be. The only way to appeal to them might be to scare them that McCranky will take their jobs away. They obviously don't give a shit about anyone else, and so it has to be something that will appeal to their self interest.

21. Undecided.
More like UNbelievable.

I mean, what's there to decide?

You either vote to surgically repair the country over a long period of time (as in get our purpose and leadership back, get our economy back on track, start bringing our troops home, etc) and for the second term, rehabilitate it . . . or strap it on the gurney and lethally inject it. WHAT'S TO DECIDE?

Here's the thing, people. If you're "undecided" at this point after eight years of Bewsh; all his bullshit and scandal and war and middle/working/poor class destruction and soon to be nine straight months of job losses, then you're either a closet racist, an uncloseted dumbass or just completely not paying attention.

If you're a McCain/Palin voter at this point, well then you just need a Buford T Justice dead-kick in the ass.

With neo-con candidates, past performance is usually a guarantee of future results. BANK on it.

22. Undecideds....make a choice already!!!!
I don't understand the reasons for people being "undecided" this close to an election...In January...yes. We didn't know a lot about these two men, but as Election Day gets closer, it just boggles my mind that people who declare themselves "undecided" can't (or won't?) just sit down with a piece of paper, list the issues that are important to them, and then vote accordingly. I mean, it's not like McCain and Obama are so alike in their stances on some major issues that it's impossible to choose between them.

Maybe "undecided" voters, instead of being as "open minded" as they would like to think they are, are just plain lazy...or maybe they just like to stroke their own egos and think they're too intellectual to get caught up in partisan choice... This occurred to me during both the 2000 and 2004 elections when a group of "undecided" voters appeared on TV...on the very eve of the elections... and sat there looking all smug and above the fray...It said to me, "Look at us...we're better than you peasants, who have blindly made choices! We're much too smart for such things!"

In any case, I think that this close to the Election, people should know what issues matter to them, and which candidate is a better representative of their opinions.

Or maybe I'm just expecting too much...

That is what a good number of undecided voters are thinking. I really can't come up with anything else.

27. I would agree except
that I saw a LOT of "undecideds" in 2000 and 2004

And they've been around for decades...long before the issue of black vs white candidates arose...

Well, OK...maybe some of them can't get past the racial thing...but let's face it...even if it were two white guys facing each other, there would still be a lot of people claiming to be "undecided".

I wonder how they manage to get through a normal day having to make decisions that are at least as important (to them) as voting for a new president...
