I was right: NYC just fined $470,000 for its legal incompetence
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 05:25 PM by NewYorkerfromMass
And that's just the beginning:

"A judge has found the city in contempt of its ruling regarding the release of prisoners. The city will be charged $1000 per each of the 470 prisoners that should have been released within the time frame mandated earlier this afternoon."

http://nyc.indymedia.org

After 9/11 this convention is the worst thing to have ever happened to NYC

How could I say such a thing? $$$$ that's how.

Cost No. 1: Police overtime. (Yeah, the kind Bush doesn't want to pay anymore.) There are literally thousands of cops working very expensive overtime right now, and have been since Sunday. I will include in this expense all the special provisions made for this week, including the temporary jail on pier 57.

Cost No. 2: Lost business income Small businesses are getting creamed. Not just because normal traffic patters have been disrupted and foot traffic is close to non-existant for some, but because a LOT of employeess simply are staying home this week. (see also no. 4.)

Cost No. 3: Traffic disruptions Delivery drivers and commuters unlucky enough to have to work this week are paying severly in time lost to traffic congestion.

Cost No. 4: Tourism down There is a net reduction in the no. of tourists in NYC this week. Proof is the many hotels that have been offering reduced rates.

Cost No. 5: City liability There will be a LOT of litigation for much of the above, but the worst thing will be all the arrests and unecessary detentions. It seems like there have been a lot of spurious arrests and the lawsuits will be a mile and a half long, and then some.

This convention was the biggest. mistake. ever.

28. I agree. Good Democratic taxpayers in NYC shouldn't be stuck with
this. Assess a chunk out of Bloomberg's and Pataki's salaries and send the bill for the rest to the RNC.

29. Bloomberg should pick up the whole tab.
It was his brilliant idea to let the Pubs exploit the shit out of New York. Let him pay.

7. Yes, and the GOP collected $180 million so far for the convention
and NYPD expects to have double that $60 million in expenses. The NYPD will have to find other sources for the shortfall, while the excess $120 million the GOP has collected will probably not go to anything to benefit NYC.

6. The city is empty and...
The rethug delegates are NOT spending any money here.

Ironically, even Bloomberg admitted that the protesters where spending more money in the stores around the Garden, for chrissakes.

What do they care, they know we are for Kerry, and would love to bankrupt us.

10. I am so sorry for my fellow NYC friends.
Not only do these people shut down a vibrant city, but they don't even come close to compensating the lost revenue from having the Repub Convention in NYC. These people are cheap, they don't tip well, and they are in fact causing the city to incur millions of dollars in expenses for their hatefest.

There has been absolutely no traffic here for the past 3 days. It's beautiful.

But, it has sucked in many, many other ways.

delivery schedules hell. There was a bread driver (A BREAD DRIVER!!!) who said he had to get up at 3 AM to make his rounds on time. There is no traffic in some places but there are also no open streets for blocks surrounding the Garden.

20. The lambs (GOP) came into the lion's den
We know Bush stole the election and illegitimately occupies the White House.
We hate this fucker's every molecule, (or whatever vile substance he's made of).
They have the nerve to come here, to a city which bore the brunt of their flaming incompetence on 9/11, and celebrate his attempt to actually get elected on his 2nd try.
We hate him, we hate them, and we just want them to know it.

Since you are so happy with all that is going on, of course you would scorn the protesters.

May the GOP always be so kind to you, because if they stop you have no voice. Thanks for all your efforts in maintaining the new BushCo world.

(isnt it the protestors outside rather then the Republicans inside who are cuasing such a mess in the city??

Food for thought anyways.)

These Americans don't have a right to be in NY just like the repuke delegates? Who would the majority of New Yorkers rather have there, the repuke delegates or the protesters? The Repuke planners know that 70% of NY is unhappy with Bush yet they thought when they scheduled that the fuhrer would be so loved because of 9-11 that there would be no problems. Funy how the city attacked thinks so little of Bush's ability to be a leader. The fact is that if Bush hadn't fucked up so severely the last 4 years there wouldn't be this many protesters there..

food for thought sweety

25. Even more food for thought..
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 07:22 PM by kerryin2004
According to the polls Bush and Kerry is still a hot issue. Theres not a clear cut winner!
So think about THIS for a minute. Lets take your normal average American citizen. Hes still on the fence. He turns on the TV. He sees the Republicans. Well dressed. Clean cut. Ok. Thats the image he forms in his head.

Really?? So those that are in more "liberal" areas are not going to think these clean cut bible thumpers are squares.. It may work in Missouri to be "clean cut"' but in Oregon,etc.. they take into account more then your looks.

Then he sees the protestors. Hair down to their ass that hasnt been cut in 3 years.

I love women with long hair, haven't seen many men protesting with long hair..

IF their wearing clothes at all there in shambles. Thats the image in his head.

Really haven't seen clothese in shambles??

Who is he going to relate to?

Who are you asking to relate?? I am a clean cut Conservative looking gentleman but I can't relate to any of the repukes..

Its fantastic people have the right to protest. Its even better they exercise that right. But do it in a way thats mature and responsible way.

So what has been done that was irresponsible.. 1,000,000 protesters and 1800 knuckleheads out of them.. That is less then 2% and probably less then an average arrest week for a city as large as NY..

Because our on the fence guy came to a conclusion. Bush is supported by clean cut conservative people.

I cant stand him, love the protesters, and I am a "clean cut" individual.. I'm sorry image is so important to you..

Kerry is supported by people that think hygeine is incense and stand in the streets nakid.

Not all of these people are Kerry supporters..BTW your inability to spell nakid correctly (IT is spelled naked) tells me you were not very well educated.. Of course I could be wrong....

YOU are a direct reflection of your political party!!

What political party are the protesters?? What exactly about bible thumping idiots makes you feel more comfortable??

Do you want to represent your Party as a mature rational American,

Define mature and rational..Please give me a little box to work with..

or as some "hippie" that stands with his dick hanging in the wind?

I haven't seen one "dick hanging anywhere but if you got tape feel free to send it to me1!

Food for thought sexy. ;)

Food for thought seaweed..

BTW: 9 posts now.

Because you are a freeper...A low post count with your strong views s indication of a freeper.

Is my opinion worth less then yours somehow??

No, but you are wrong..

26. part of the problem, i dont dress like he conservative jr leaguer
i dont have hair coiffed, i dont have an all matching outfit with white sox, and patten leather shoes and a bow in my hair and make up applied perfectly.......ergo, laura bush

i would hate to think that is how I have to dress be and present myself so that YOU will take me seriously like a reasonable adult. cloning 101

i assure you, my wind blown hair, lack of make and cut off jeans, doesnt stop me from being a kind and campassionate, loving and honest adn intelligent, even reasonable person

i dont ask all of us to be me, as i would want all the people to be that well groomed every hair in place perfectly dressed person

this is off track of what is happening in ny too, btw. just because this 1800 were arrested doesnt mean they were violent. they were picked off for many many manufactured reason. and this is paying attention and doing the research. then they were treated in a way they shouldnt have been EVEN if they broke the law, and that is the point of all of this

27. Re: No. 2 - It's not just small businesses
The lost productivity in the big firms is costing a fortune. My firm allowed people to stay home this week, or to come in late. It's an unscheduled holiday week simply because it's impossible to get around the city.

I saw a Snapple delivery guy in the pizza place last night complaining that he had 15 deliveries still to go, and look what time it is. It was six o'clock. Everyone suffered this week. Not just those of us who were consumed with rage.
