NBC showing Zell as a nutcase
Showed him asking Tweety to a duel. NBC is reporting republicans not happy with Miller.

1. They must have been nervous to begin with...
suppose he'd gone out and done something even crazier, like castigating Rethugs for their policies and general ridiculousness.

As it was, it was almost that bad - he clearly decompensated. He's gonna be in hospital real soon...

I was complainin earlier about Zell getting a free ride .....

That fucking nutjob was WAY outta line last night ...

and a big fucking liar to boot ....

Soldiers are BRAVE, indeed: and we respect their service and courage: but they are tools of the government ...

Soldiers implement the policies formed by the government that was installed by the consent of the governed .... they do NOT give or create rights .... They do not give citzens the 'right to free speech', which is guaranteed by the Bill of Rights, not instituted by military fiat ....

Soldiers, whom we respect as protectors of our security, carry out orders handed down by a civilian government which was formed by the consent of the governed .... They do NOT create policy .....

Our system of government was devised by great men who were enlightened intellectuals .... Locke, Hobbes, Rousseau, Paine, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin ..... ALL great intellectuals of the enlightenment, and of which few were soldiers ....

Miller claims we obtained our rights from soldiers: ... WRONG: Soldiers provide no more 'rights' to us than wrenches give us V8 engines ...

...floating around the Internet. One of the blogs posted the whole thing this morning. Miller was actually quoting SPAM!!!!

a-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah-hah!

Can you imagine if he'd read the wrong spam?

18. I think theres more to it
LIke how ego-gratifying it is to be so celebrated in Conservative Circles as the last "honest" Democrat. Although given his recent nuttiness, that may change.

Liebermann also supported the Iraq war and still does, but, to his credit, you don't see him pulling these kind of pranks.

22. And Scoop Jackson was a JFK Democrat
Does that make JFK a "neocon."

For those who don't know who Henry "Scoop" Jackson was, he was a longtime Senator from Washington. Generally considered a liberal on economic and social policy, he was a hawk on foreign policy, very much in the JFK mold. The closest thing we have today to a Scoop Jackson Democrat is Joe Lieberman.

26. I think the neocon vision (edited)
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 06:25 PM by Jim4Wes
Is more common than some might think. If Bush had prepared better for the Iraq war before going in and kept better control of the insurgency, he would be leading this campaign by a safe margin. There are levels of neoconism I am sure, so if JFK shared some of their vision it would not surprise me.

Also William Kristol and another PNAC'er were staffers for Jackson way back when which suggests he must have fit in pretty well with their views on foreign policy.

Here is one description of the neocon vision:

Neocons envision a world in which the United States is the unchallenged superpower, immune to threats. They believe that the US has a responsibility to act as a "benevolent global hegemon." In this capacity, the US would maintain an empire of sorts by helping to create democratic, economically liberal governments in place of "failed states" or oppressive regimes they deem threatening to the US or its interests. In the neocon dream world the entire Middle East would be democratized in the belief that this would eliminate a prime breeding ground for terrorists. This approach, they claim, is not only best for the US; it is best for the world. In their view, the world can only achieve peace through strong US leadership backed with credible force, not weak treaties to be disrespected by tyrants.

Any regime that is outwardly hostile to the US and could pose a threat would be confronted aggressively, not "appeased" or merely contained. The US military would be reconfigured around the world to allow for greater flexibility and quicker deployment to hot spots in the Middle East, as well as Central and Southeast Asia. The US would spend more on defense, particularly for high-tech, precision weaponry that could be used in preemptive strikes. It would work through multilateral institutions such as the United Nations when possible, but must never be constrained from acting in its best interests whenever necessary.

34. I hope that is the way it turns out. If so, democrats need to manipulate
the media to run clips from both the Matthews show and the actual speech. I think some of Miller's statements and facial expressions from the speech might be good in some ads.

Actually, they probably thought their right-wingers are so nuts that Zell would blend right in. They shouldn't have brought him on in prime time with all the grownups to see though.

31. don't kid yourselves
this is a post from another board:

Viva la ZELL!
WOW! After McCain, Rudy, and Arnold I did not think this Convention could get any better. Well it just did. Best speech yet.

Had a friend just call screaming at the top of his lungs that it was the best speech he's ever heard.

I literally hit the ground laughing when he put out the line about spitballs!

Wait...I was interupted posting this. My mother just called me and said that Miller's speech switched her from undecided to Bush, she will be voting for the first time in her 42 years of life

http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=637206

and the thread goes on with many people jumping on the "it was wonderful" bandwagon.

33. Miller is a classic anti-intellectual with a huge chip on his shoulder
I would love to hear Thomas Frank's take on him and his speech.

I swear the way he acted on Hardball was one of the nuttiest things I've ever seen. What a persecution complex! He had his mind made up that he was going to be picked on going in and just flipped out over a pretty mild question.
