My fear is that Obama is peaking too soon
What's happening now is great. We all are beginning to feel a little vindicated. But how long can he keep this up for a little more than a month?

It just seems too soon for me. I'd rather he have this lead with two weeks left, not five.

72. Dropping Palin now would be too little, too late
Edited on Wed Oct-01-08 09:24 PM by rocknation
because it would illuminate the fact that it was a mistake to pick her in the first place--something that someone suspected of creeping senility simply can't afford.

I wrote this exactly one month ago:

If McCain doesn’t realize that Palin takes away his best argument against Obama (too young and inexperienced) and strengthens Obama’s best arguments against him (too out of touch with social reality; too loyal to the neoconservative status quo), then he is grossly unqualified for the job of being in charge of the Free World.

NO, NOT THAT CHINESE!

It's fulfilling at first, but once you sit on it, its effect wears off.

Palin fulfilled the McCain excitement gap at first, but after voters sat on it, they realized she was an empty pants suit.

If O is doing badly, many people here are worried and when he is really doing well many people are still worried and spewing demoralizing stuff. when will it stop. There are early votings in many places now so O needs to be where he is now, worriers. This inventing of of something to worry and write about in DU is really getting out of hand. Someone just wrote that he/she is sad about O being up in the 3 majot states. Jesus Damn Christ. My Lord.

26. I'm feeling the same fear you are, right wing 527's are now tying Obama to Wright from those numbers
There's an ad on the Politico (I couldn't watch it for some reason, I think my connection was just being slow) of a rightwing 527 attack on Obama linking him to the whole laundry list of questionable characters they've attacked his ties to before (Wright, Ayes, and someone else I'm forgetting).

Plus there's stories in several places about conservatives pushing McCain hard to step up the attacks on Obama, and to bring up stuff like reverend Wright, etc.

if this worries you the next few weeks are going to drive you insane. The pukes will pull out everything they've got and the problem is that we've seen it all before. They scream Wright and everyone says "what's new about this", they say Rezco and everyone yawns and then out come the big guns. They scream Ayers from the rooftops and everyone goes "who". McCain has nothing new, Obama hasn't even mentioned the Keating 5 yet.

These "questionable characters" you mention, there is nothing with any of them that they haven't already tried. Too bad so sad.

136. I know, I'm a pessimistic person, I always assume the worst
I wish I could be more of an optimist at times.

It's just the 8 years of Bush, and how close of an election it was in 2000 and 2004 that worry me so much that the rightwingers will find some divisive issue to divide and conquer us again. I dread the thought of a McCain presidentcy, as it would cement neoconservative rule of the Supreme Court for the next few decades.

29. Early voting is going on in something like 20 states.
OUR job is to keep working - keep knocking on doors, making phone calls, donating money, offering rides to the polls, anything and everything to keep the momentum going our way. If we build a huge rolling tide in our favor it will be more difficult for the bastards to sabotage the election and take it away from the American people.

We need to fight like America's future depends on OUR EFFORTS - because it does!

I don't think it's ever smart to assume it's all good and sewn up.

That said, though, this has been one darned smart campaign from the start. I'm getting to the point where I certainly trust their grasp of strategy far, far more than my own. Time and again, when I've felt concerned as you do, they've shown me they're already three steps ahead of that.

(Chuck Todd and Charlie Cook tonight on Hardball, both saying that if McCain doesn't do something NOW, he's likely to find his position behind locked in. Just a little hope to hold on to for you!)

54. Obama will win decisively.
But we have to keep our eyes on the prize. We can't ease up until Wednesday, November 5th, and maybe not even then. The big lead in the polls -- even as flawed as they are, what with leaving out new voters -- is absolutely necessary when/if the thugs try to steal the election by hacking the machines. If Obama's up double digits all over the place and there's a surprise "loss," we have grounds for raising holy hell about it. Given what we're seeing with the media now, I think not even THEY would stand for that kind of blatant theft.

This is perfect timing. Obama is steady and on point, "staying the course," and brushing off every attack by simply telling the truth.

Meanwhile, McLame is completely out of ammo, and is reacting like a cornered animal.

Obama's lead is still growing, so he hasn't peaked. Even after a peak there is a time while you are on top. I don't think there is danger of peaking too soon at this point. Although there still could be some nasty rove trick left.

Listen to what is going to happen: Sarah Failin will lose the debate Thurday night and McNasty will lose the second debate with Obama. The news for McLame will only get worse and not better. Coming out of the V.P. debate Obama will increase his lead from 10 point ahead to an astonishing 15 point or so ahead. She will do that bad.Past mid October its already late for McCain and friends. Coming back past mid October is a fantasy.

Only Humphrey came back in 1968 for a loss and Ford came back in the final days of 1976 and he also lost. Only come from behind winner this late in modern elections was Truman who defeated Thomas Dewey in 1948.

It aint happening this year. McCain campaign = finnished as of latest polls. LMAO. :)

There is no "peaking."

To beat them, we must crush them utterly. We must make their heads spin with how badly they are losing.

Do you recall George W. Bush, and the last 8 years? Do you not realize that McCain is really a sleaze, and way too old? Palin will do Cheney's bidding.

Crush them. Nuke them. Now, and until the election.

Perhaps rather than "more fear than I thought", it's simply a matter of observing a lay-circus performer always reaching for the rope, yet missing it every time and falling into the rescue-net of anonymity.

I see at least another 5 points of potential up side. I would call his natural peak at about 56 or 57 to 42. I see 40 to 42 as the rough estimate of the natural floor for McCain. When McCain is doing poorly, his numbers have hovered in the very low 40's.

127. This is THE right time for one of them to break away and run with
it. The question you need to ask yourself is which would you rather be?

Within the last four weeks, the election if it follows historical patterns, will bring nasty tricks for both of them. At that point, anything can happen to either. For now, just enjoy the trend and hope it holds regardless of what dirty trick cards McCain is holding under the table for just the right moment to play them.

Sam

141. Complacency could be a killer... my small recommendation...
1) If you're worried then GET OUT THE VOTE.
2) If you're predicting landslide well you want to be sure don't you... GET OUT THE VOTE!
Cheers
BK

144. Right time to be leading in the polls with all the early voting
Like many mentioned here, this might not be a peak since Obama might grow even more. Given McCain grumpyness you see that Obama is in a good position to win this.

over and over that this campaign will be over by October 15th. More and more people are taking advantage of early voting. I know I am :)

154. I think it's a reasonable fear, but ...
... amazingly Obama is peaking just as early voting is beginning, and the challenge for the campaign will be to maintain the peak. The campaign has been so smart, my guess is that they're counting on Obama staying high in the polls until after the second debate and will then implement a new strategy for the final 2-1/2 weeks of the campaign.

164. Remember early voting.
Turnout will be higher during the more turbulent times....and I would have to say that this crisis is probably crazy enough to drive people to the polls. Now is actually quite a good time for Obama to be up, especially since we can win Ohio this way. :toast:

165. One other thing
Obama was criticized for not closing Clinton out in the primary. If I've learned one thing about Obama, its that he's the smartest guy when it comes to politicking and I know DAMN WELL he has a strategy for doing things differently.

169. What leads you to believe today's numbers are the peak?
What leads you to believe today's numbers are the peak?

What's the precise date you believe he should peak on? How is that particular (with both relevance and precision, please) better than "peaking" now (and to be honest, I don't think we've yet begin to see his real peak)?

How does outscoring your opponent 55-3 in the third quarter jeopardize the game?

"I'd rather he have this lead with two weeks left, not five."
In all probability, his lead will be at it's most dramatic at this point three days before the general election-- I'd hazard his mere five-seven point lead (depending on your pool of choice) will widen to a ten-fifteen point lead at that point?
