Palin, in interview, casts herself as a federalist
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20081002/ap_on_el_pr/palin_supreme_court

WASHINGTON - When it comes to the Supreme Court, only one case comes to Sarah Palin's mind: Roe v. Wade.

In an interview broadcast Wednesday on the "CBS Evening News," the Republican vice presidential candidate cast herself as a federalist in explaining why she thought the court got it wrong on the landmark decision that legalized abortion.

She also could not name any other decisions by the high court that she disagrees with.

"I think it should be a states issue not a federal government, mandated, mandating yes or no on such an important issue," said Palin, who opposes abortion except in cases where the pregnancy threatens the woman's life.

............"I'm in that sense a federalist, where I believe that states should have more say in the laws of their lands and individual areas," she added.

------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now she's a Federalist..She really is a microcosm of America in herself.

So do Federalists and Republicans beliefs mirror each other that closely?
Did McLame know this about Palin when he chose her?
Maybe that's why proper vetting is necessary.
ahhh, the many sides of Sarah Palin.

9. Actually I think she was speaking of the modern day Federalist Society
which I believe uses the state's rights argument in striking down federal laws they don't like.

8. Not in an historical American sense.

The American Federalists of the post-Revolutionary period, in the early days of the Republic, were the Hamiltonians who advocated a more strongly centralised government.

10. As history changes things,
so does the understanding about some words/concepts.

Republicans? Democrats? Federalists? what are YOU doing there?

Her answer about Roe and States was pretty good, IMO; many people think such matters should be made closer to ones home, where 'the people' are more likely to have similar customs and values. = Federalism of today > states rights.

23. "Are you a Hamiltonian federalist, Governor Palin?"
Now THERE'S a question she'll have fun with! I don't think she'd dare come back with "In what respect, Gwen?"

11. That's the "New Federalist" definition...
...promulgated by Reagan, who believed in block granting Federal money to states to allow them to have some control over it's use.

The classical, original Hamiltonian Federalism (Federalist Party) meant strong Federal control over the states.

So I guess it matters which "federalism" she was referring to.

I prefer the original definition.

13. Like she even knows what Federalist means. Like she knew the Bush Doctrine.
Someone probably said the word 'Federalist' to her & she just thought she'd use it once or twice.
