800 Mile Wide, 150 MPH Hurricane to Hit FLA as News Media Plays Politics
Where is the national news media's collective brain?

Shouldn't they be warning the hell out of Floridians right now, advising them of shelter locations, evacuation routes, methods to secure their property and pets?

An 800 Mile Wide, 150 mile per hour hurricane is about to strike Florida with over 10 feet, possibly 15 feet tidal surges...

And the national media is playing politics.

This hurricane IS a weapon of mass destruction.

I've called CNN, MSNBC and Fox complaining about the "balance" of political news against this approaching catastrophic hurricane.

Eat, drink and be merry.

2. the hurricane LED the network evening news
but, ultimately it is a LOCAL story as far as evacuation routes, shelters, etc. are concerned. it would be ridiculous for national broadcasts to try to cover it.

and LOCAL people in FL should pay attention to LOCAL news and emergency broadcasts...

do you think they should depend on worthless cable WHORES for essential information about their localities?

3. This Hurricane is Going to Be Disastrous.
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 07:13 PM by David Zephyr
The national news media should be doing more coverage. Listen, they talked over the DNC's speeches, they broke into the DNC convention with updates on Kobe, Michael, Lacy which they deemed "newsworthy".

This hurricane is newsworthy.

In any event, they will be covering it after it hits.

I grew up in hurricane country. I don't recall seeing anything this size in a very long time, if ever.

7. I agree with you. many have family and friends there and
I am sure are extremely worried about their loved ones...they had it on quite a bit earlier, but it seems to have gotten the back burner as the bushathon began to troll it's ugly head..

I hope everyone in Fl stays safe. I am keeping an eye on it myself, living on the coast and also having family there, the fear is very real and should be heeded and should not be used as a political tool...

Just my opinion..

4. Actually, with God's second son ready to adderss HIS nation
tonight, I was surprised the NBC and CBS did like 7 minutes of the storm at the top of the broadcast. Damn, Bush upstaged on his big night by his brother's goddamn hurricane.

6. I was watching some news coverage on the CBS affiliate WFOR in Miami
Edited on Thu Sep-02-04 07:13 PM by Jonathan Little
over the internet and I got the understanding that they are going to air the CBS programming (including the idiot) on their UPN station tonight and provide hurricane coverage on the CBS station.

I guess it doesn't matter to CNN/MSNBC/etc. if the rest of the nation doesn't know what's going on down in Florida.

8. It's supposed to be a Catagory 2
when it hits. Top winds about 105.

(The storm is actually weakening.)

This is the most recent advisory.

I thinks it's TV2.

Maybe it just their weatherman's prediction?

14. That is not what is being reported here
It will decrease after it hits land, but all projections are that it wil still be a 4 when it first hits land.

25. NOAH is still leaning on the side of caution
but there is indication that the storm is weakening. Yes, that can still change. It will take a few more updates to be sure. But from looking at the satellite images, the eye is just about closed up and could fall apart. This would be good news.

ALTHOUGH FRANCES CONTINUES TO HAVE A GOOD SATELLITE REPRESENTATION
... DATA FROM A RECONNAISSANCE PLANE INDICATE THAT THE MINIMUM
PRESSURE HAS RISEN TO 948 MB AND THE EYEWALL IS CURRENTLY
DISRUPTED. INITIAL INTENSITY HAS BEEN ADJUSTED TO 120 KNOTS. THIS
IS PROBABLY A MINOR FLUCTUATION ASSOCIATED WITH INNER CORE
PROCESSES AND FRANCES COULD EASILY RE-INTENSIFY. NEVERTHELESS...
FRANCES IS EXPECTED TO REMAIN A CATEGORY FOUR HURRICANE ON THE
SAFFIR/SIMPSON SCALE UNTIL LANDFALL.

18. Did you see that on that bizarre Dan Rather CBS report? It's NOT a 2
but his "weather guy's" report saying it was a 2 was different from every other report out there. But, he reported from the "Repug Convention" with the bands blaring so I wonder why his "weather guy" was different from NOAA/Weather Underground and Palm Beach Post Online which had the most current updates?? a little playing to the Chimp here? Or, Rather/CBS has access to the only weatherman who will turn a 4 Hurricane into a two for political purposes.

15. I'm in Virginia. Why do I need evacuation routes?
This is why there is local media. I'm assuming that if you live in Florida, you are getting plenty of coverage on this storm. My company has an office in South Florida, and I've been getting updates from them so I assume they know what's going on. If the Florida media is not doing it's job, then I suppose NBC, CNN, Fox, etc need to step in.

This wasn't intended to sound callous, but I know last year in Northern Virginia, I had nothing but hurricane news for the week before and after Isabel. And I certainly wasn't looking to Dan Rather in New York for help. I was using WTOP and WUSA. I'm assuming the people in Florida are getting the news they need.

Miami is becoming a ghost town.

One million people displaced is national news.

I still don't see why NBC needs to announce evacuation routes. Can't these people turn on the radio in their cars?

16. Actually there isn't anything new to report
the NHC only issues updates every three hours. The last one was at 8 and was widely reported. The next one is at 11. Even though I am in Florida, I am watching CSI. If anything changes, the local station will break in. It is pretty useless to continue to hear the same info over and over.

21. Well, maybe it's boring but I personally still like to be connected to my
"fellow Americans" who are suffering from floods, wildfires, drought, volcano eruptions, earthquakes, storms, hurricanes, tornadoes and whatever other disasters we seem to be having in rapid sucession...whether it's due to Global Warming or the Chimp's Armageddon coming..I've been on this planet EARTH long enough to know that our Weather is totally CRAZY since the Chimp got into office...so it's a BIG story to me. Bigger than this asshole who's had a stage made just for him so that as Breslin said: "His feet don't touch the Earth.."

23. I personally don't like the "severe weather" stories
Their part of the trend of sensationalizing the news that really bothers me. At the end of the day, it's just a weather report. Everytime a snowflake hits the ground in DC, all the local stations "bring you live team coverage of this winter storm." Frankly, I can look outside.

Yes, I want to be updated on what's going on in Florida, but I don't feel the need to have 24/7 coverage of a storm.

"Big Storm heading for Florida."
"Big Storm still heading for Florida."
"See these swirly clouds? Big storm."

27. BTW...9:39 report, still a 4 but running into resistence from a front over
Florida which might help to weaken it. But the downside is the flooding rains from the "slowing down" will cause more havoc. Plus there's always those tornado's the damn hurricans spawn...so even a weakening (thank God if that occurs) still has it covering most of Florida and overflowing the many dikes and damns and lakes which have homes around them. Even a "Category 2" for a storm this size will cause massive damage.

Update was Weather Channel, Dr. Steve Lyons...
