Who is Lester Maddox?
Maddox, a born showman who never asked forgiveness for his segregationist stands, came to national attention in 1964 when African-Americans attempted to integrate his Pickrick chicken restaurant.

Maddox turned the black people away that day, the day after the Civil Rights Act was signed into law, standing in the door of his restaurant carrying a pistol. Supporters stood behind him with ax handles.

He later closed his restaurant rather than serve African-Americans. Ax handles became his symbol.

5. bad nostalgia
don't know if anyone is old enough to remember those days... but was in Jackson Miss with my German grandmother having a sundae when we were thrown out of drug store as "there's going to be trouble"

Nana and I were standing on the street and Martin Luther King and hundreds of people were walking down the street very peacefully. The white people were running for their lives.

I was the only white girl (besides Nana) witnessing it all...vivid memory.

8. Yet, Zel supported black civil rights leader Lewis.
And taking off the Southern Cross from the Georgian flag. It is inexplicable. Yet some thing must have touched a deep nerve in him.
