When Michelle Met Barack
How romance in the sedate corridors of a corporate law firm changed everything for the woman who might become the country's first African American first lady

By Liza Mundy
Sunday, October 5, 2008; Page W10

In the summer of 1989, Michelle Robinson told her mother she was going to concentrate on her law career and not worry about dating. She was 25 and had just finished her first year as an associate at Sidley & Austin, a corporate law firm in her home town of Chicago. Not long after, the firm assigned her to mentor a summer associate named Barack Obama.

Even then, there was a lot of buzz about this 27-year-old prodigy from Harvard Law School. Sidley didn't usually hire first-year law students as summer associates, so Barack's arrival was noteworthy. Martha Minow, a law professor at Harvard, told her father, Newton Minow, a high-ranking partner at Sidley, that Barack was possibly the most gifted student that she had ever taught. Michelle, who'd graduated from Harvard Law herself in 1988, felt annoyed by all the chattering. Why were people surprised that a black man might be articulate and capable?

Her own skepticism took a different form. His name struck her as odd, as did the fact that he had grown up in Hawaii. She assumed he would be "strange and overly intellectual" and that she would almost certainly dislike him.
"He sounded too good to be true," she told David Mendell, author of "Obama: From Promise to Power." "I had dated a lot of brothers who had this kind of reputation coming in, so I figured he was one of these smooth brothers who could talk straight and impress people. So we had lunch, and he had this bad sport jacket and a cigarette dangling from his mouth, and I thought: 'Oh, here you go. Here's this good-looking, smooth-talking guy. I've been down this road before.' "

-snip-
In interviews and speeches, Michelle frequently talks about her early impressions of Barack. When she first met him, she told her local newspaper, the Hyde Park Herald, "he had no money; he was really broke. He wasn't ever going to try to impress me with things. His wardrobe was kind of cruddy . . . His first car had so much rust that there was a rusted hole in the passenger door. You could see the ground when you were driving. He loved that car. It would shake ferociously when it would start up. I thought, 'This brother is not interested in ever making a dime.' "

1. we simply MUST get this man a new car....
.... you know, one with bullet proof glass and flags on the front ..... often lead around town by another car with a siren ...... and flashing lights.

Aw heck, he's such a nice guy, lets throw in an airplane and a helicopter too! He deserves it!

4. Oh, that is a great article!
Thanks for sharing it.

But *eyedart* I'm kind of concerned. Michelle's link to Barney the purple dinosaur scares me more than Barack's "link" to William Ayers. :scared:

5. I'll throw in another slightly related item from his memoir.
If anyone thinks that Barack Obama hasn't seen the tough side of life tell them this one: One night he and another organizer were coming back from somewhere and a gunfight erupted right on the street they were walking down. Two gang members shooting at each. Obama and the other guy hit the deck and stayed down until the shooters had moved away.

I read this a while ago so might not have it exactly right, but the gist of it is that he worked in a rough and dangerous area for very little money because he was dedicated to and believed in his work. I think of this story often whenever I hear about how he's an elitist--which is garbage.

7. I had a VW Bug where my fat friend
put his foot through the rusted floorboard of the backseat. That guy always reminds me of Ignatius Reilly.

I felt just a little bad about having a hole in the car, but I didn't care either.

Go Obama!

I read this piece online, first thing yesterday morning. I was disappointed in Mundy. I thought the piece sounded as though she was digging for dirt and anything negative she could find about Michelle, but came up short. Actually to be frank, I was annoyed. And then looking at all the rascist trolls commenting on the piece made me sick. If you check out the photos it's the same thing. Pieces like this one I don't find particularly helpful.

To me Liza paints Michelle as hard to get along with, overly ambitious, snarky and a whining hard core black woman who is race sensitive, who just doesn't really get how lucky she is... LIZA MUNDY also seems to relish dragging out those stupid quotes that show her as somehow dismissive of Barack.

As a black woman who also attended Harvard, I get all the code language and the implications. Here are two people who display the best of what this country is supposedly about and, that is not what I got from the article, not at all. I thought it was facile and stupid. What kills me is this-- if two white West Virginia trailer park kids achieved what they did, we as a nation wpuld be falling all over them and what an example of love and family values they are. If those two little girls were blond with curls, he'd be up by 25. Take that to the bank.

Liza is having a chat tomorrow. Join in and commment however you see it.

13. And yet the real people shine through,
at least from the excerpt I read here. I love these people so much, and am so grateful to them.

Another smile, if you haven't seen it yet.
