Wow - Ron Fournier PUMMELS Bush's Speech
Bush Labors to Shift Focus of Election

NEW YORK - An unpopular war and 1.1 million lost jobs is enough to kill a presidency, so President Bush tried Thursday night to make the election about something else: himself and his leadership style.

Reluctant to admit mistakes, Bush copped to a few — arrogant, too blunt and grammatically challenged — and explained them away with laugh lines. But he didn't give an inch on the matters that matter most, a war in Iraq that has cost the lives of nearly 1,000 U.S. troops, and a job-loss record that rivals Herbert Hoover.

These two issues are fueling a sense of unease among voters, with nearly 60 percent saying the nation is headed in the wrong direction. Bush's big challenge was making Americans feel better about the course of their nation and the politics of their president, a task he tackled with a star-spangled political convention near Ground Zero, site of the nation's deadliest attack and a symbol of his wartime leadership.

Stick with me, Bush said. By a 3-to-1 margin, people think the war in Iraq increased rather than decreased the threat of terrorism, and a solid majority don't think Bush has a clear plan for ending it. He offered none in the speech, promising to bring troops home "as soon as possible," when Iraq is secure and democratic.

Bush defended the war by tying it, with the slenderest of threads, to the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. At the dawn of an era of terror, his hand was forced by Saddam Hussein and strengthened by the support of U.S. allies and congressional leaders, including Kerry, the president said.

3. Whoa! Fournier? For real???
I have to admit, he's one of those guys I usually curse at, when I read his pro-Bush, snide-about-Kerry articles. I'm not objective enuff to judge Bush's speech.. but HOW could Bush SUDDENLY become a rousing speaker? He doesn't read, doesn't keep up with the business of this country, doesn't want to be bothered most of the time. He's reading a speech that was written for him.. and was vetted by him 31 times (to get the polysyllabic words out?). He does NOT write his own material.. he is NOT Winston Churchill. He's playing a part... THAT'S why this speech was no more convincing than anything else he's read/said. The tears at the military references were real, though... he's got emotional issues, and can't control himself. If he TRULY loved the military, he would stop screwing them over by cutting benefits and abusing the National Guard.

Ron Fournier writes that article about Bush's speech.. who would have thought???

4. Yeah, Ron Friggin' Fournier!
Who'da thunk it? The guy pisses me off more than spam, and he comes out with this while everyone else is giving an A+ for Bush's literacy.

15. I thought the same thing
I slammed Fournier in these forums a month or so back, and only a few mustered a defense of him.

But he has not made me a convert. Like Tweety, they blow which way the wind does, so to speak...

8. Irregardless of whether we agree, we always know ...
... where he stands?????

BULLSHIT.

Recently he said that the war on terrorism may not be winnable. A day later he came out and said we would DEFINITELY win.

HE campaigned AGAINST nation building efforts specifically addressing the efforts in Kosovo and Somalia (which his father started). Now, he wants to go across the world unseating "dictators" and installing democracy. Of course, some dictators don't need replacing, like the ones in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

Elected leaders who don't agree with America need to be overthrown to "re-establish freedom". When voters make mistakes and elect someone like Aristid Of Hugo Chavez, we need to step in and install a "Democratic Transition Dictator".

Bush said Saddam had weapons, now he doesn't. They said they KNEW exactly where they were. Now they don't know. Bush said Saddam was involved in 9/11, then he said he wasn't.

Bush pressed his "No Child Left Behind" program. Then he refused to allocate the funds that Congress approved. He promised 4 billion to New York. Then he forgot about them.

George said he would create 5.6 million jobs, than he said he wouldn't. Than he lost even more jobs.

Bush said he'd treat soldiers with respect and dignity. Than he cut veterans benefits and combat pay. They said we would be greated with flowers in Iraq. We were greeted with IEDs.

They said that Chalabi would be the man to lead Iraq despite being a convicted felon. Now they say that Chalabi is a crook having embezzled money.

Dubaya Fish Bush. Flipping and flopping trying to find his oil pond.

Is he announcing plans to veto Homeland Security or taking credit for it?

23. Why is 9/11 a "symbol of his wartime leadership"?
rather than a symbol of his National Security FAILURES?

Also, how many chins does Cheney have?

Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 01:31 AM by liburl
No one has pointed this out. The 'almost 1,000' number forgets the 130 or so that were killed during the invasion. 100+900 = 1,000

28. Let It Come In A Later Newscycle - Let CNN Build It Up
I hate to be so cynical towards the good people who honored our country with their sacrifice - no matter how I disagreed with the baseless reasons - but this will have a tremendous effect on the electorate that we don't want to quibble over.
