1. So his options are flat---lose,
Or go nasty---look like an asshole, and dive further into the depths in polling.

Is that it?

3. I believe he has already lost - Palin was the icing on the cake.
But, you can count on the Republicans to run a dishonest election when possible. That is probably McCain's last chance now.

I think his negativity will lose him a few votes, will only serve to inflame and anger the real Obama/Democrat haters on the very stupid right.

4. I'm not sure that's sufficient.
Don't forget that McCain has begun a scorched earth campaign of smears and Obama simply refuses to go very negative, lest he look "angry." Obama is up against McCain's campaign manager Steve Schmidt who has been called by a McCain aide, "The message Nazi." ( See here http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-na-schmidt6-2008oct06,0,7177006,full.story ) Obama and Biden have so far failed to score a knock out in debates. A flat debate tonight may be what we get but it will be followed by more smears and the GOP 527s are gearing up. Schmidt was actually instrumental in the Swiftboating of Kerry. I frankly think Obama will not score a knockout tonight and that McCain's attacks will cut hard.
