Polls are likely going to tighten over the next few days
Whatever the reasons, it's likely that both national and battleground state polls are going to tighten up some. I don't think you'll see any great upward movement of McCain, but some inching up is to be expected. The debate tonight could also have some impact on voters. And if McCain is perceived to have aquitted himself well, it may help him.

In any case, I don't think we can assume that Obama will keep rising in the polls up to election day. I do think it will be difficult for McCain to make deep inroads in his lead.

1. I hope Obama puts the old man away tonight
But there is the Brokaw factor and we all know he will pander to McCain as much as possible.

2. The polls are tightening because that is what the media wants....
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 07:08 AM by FrenchieCat
Which is why they are talking about Ayers and not Keating. Because they decided that McCain needed a Boost.

What they don't have control over is Obama's debate performance and how voters will react to it. They can only try to control it......but it is one of those current events that is bigger than they are.

Also watch the stock market......because that is something also not under their control....fortunately.

The media wants to go cultural with all of the primary stuff on Obama. They act like they don't have anything on McCain, although there is plenty there.

They are back to cheering McCain, although he told the entire press corp to kiss his ass, and they are doing it; they are back to kissing his ass.

Plus they are trying to talk the polls down, by having a couple of outlier bring the average down (CBS and Zogby)...and then talking about how the numbers are coming down.

It's like a game to them.

4. that's just too simplistic
first of all, thank god the press has been exposing the lies about Ayers and Obama, and sorry, that's been the overall response of the MSM to the vile McCain/Palin lies. What do you expect? The MSM just to throw a veil of silence over what the McCain campaign is saying? That's just ridiculous. And the media certainly is covering shit about McCain. Your take on this is completely askew. It's simply a falsehood to claim the MSM, as a whole, is back to cheering McCain. That's not what's happening.

It's a good thing to call the MSM on their shit. That's not what you're doing. You're making claims that are overly broad and in some cases just false.

If you can't see the difference in how the MSM is treating Obama vs how they treated Kerry, you're looking through a really skewed lens.

11. CNN stopped exposing McCain/Palin and is instead promoting their lies.
Edited on Tue Oct-07-08 07:29 AM by dkf
They are presenting the McCain side as fact and running on and on and on with minimal rebuttal.

They just had one taped segment of a very ineffectual woman for the Obama campaign that I had never seen before. She was bad and sounded like she was making excuses for Obama. It was really sad.

All they needed was someone to say "HE WAS EIGHT"! But no.

3. Take a look at the slow and steady trending...
These threads are invaluable. There's still a lot of work to do, but the trends are working in our favor.

8. Obama may not keep rising for the entire month, but I don't think he's topped off, either. Take the
bailout, the global economic collapse and the hearings now showing Wall Street insiders got special treatment from the gubbamint and it is not a great time for God Incarnate to be running as a Republican, and McCain is a far cry from the deity. Then add McCain's erraticness, his pick of Sarah "Winken, Blinken and Odd" Palin, his age, Keating Five, etc. and you have a near perfect storm.

9. I think you are correct
They will tighten and that is OK. Some blame the media which could have some impact but the undecideds will start coming home to roost.

12. I looked at the Daily Kos poll from last night
and it narrowed ever so slightly to 50-41. The three day rolling average is 52-41 right now.

I watched CNN and MSNBC all day yesterday. They talked about the stock market tanking primarily, then was Ayers but a close third was Keating 5. So they were not being just all over Ayers and not Keating. (Of course Fox was.)

Today the AP unleashed teh McCain ties to the Iran-Contra group. We need that to get some play also.

18. Me too. I call gross stupidity when I see it. Well, not all the time
there's way too much of it to be able to do so.

Try doing something about your ignorance. My post wasn't even remotely handwringing, dear.

13. If the Palin vaudeville show continues like it has
this might force them to keep the polls where they are rather than tightening. Otherwise, if they cage her, they might have justification to tighten.

20. ? There's no there in your comment
In general once a candidate like McCain goes down in the poll this close to an election he doesn't start to make it closer. The undecideds are becoming less and less. There are simply fewer voters for McCain to attract.
