Releasing the portions of his speech blasting Bush and Cheney early in the day to ensure that it made the morning papers whose deadlines would otherwise have precluded them from covering his speech.
For example, the September 3 online edition of the New York Times included this passage in its lead story about Bush's speech:
In an unusual counterattack on the night of an incumbent's acceptance speech, Mr. Kerry, under intensifying pressure from Democrats to fight back, scheduled a late-night rally in Springfield, Ohio, to deliver his toughest attack on Mr. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney.
"You all saw the anger and distortion of the Republican convention," Mr. Kerry said. "For the past week, they attacked my patriotism and even my fitness to serve as commander in chief. Well, here's my answer to them. I will not have my commitment to defend this country questioned by those who refused to serve when they could have, by those who misled America into Iraq."
Unheard of for a story about the nominee's big speech to include a reference to the response by his opponent.
And it was smart not to release the WHOLE speech so as not to tip his entire hand before Bush's speech.
These people know what they're doing.
