So, how was Bush's speech tonight?
I know we all hate him. But, objectively, was it the least bit inspiring? Was it anything that he might get a bounce from? I couldn't access a t.v. and I couldn't access this site, which is where I would have gotten my news anyway so could someone update me?

7. what complete folderol
He said nothing new, his speech was flat and lifeless, and he failed to lay out any sort of vision for the future. Missouri and Ohio are still reeling from job losses. Do you really think that speech inspired those reeling from the economy?

27. I think Bush himself has been doing that...
And Dean. He fired up a base of Democrats that don't necissarily vote all the time.

25. There is little chance
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 03:18 AM by fujiyama
Bush will take WA, MI, or PA. I know PA has supposedly tightened recently, but I still think Kerry will take it. I think OR will also go to Kerry in the end because of the lack of support for Nader. The only two Gore states Bush has a good chance in are WI and IA.

I wouldn't give up on OH and MO though. They have had a ton of job losses and there have been huge efforts made in terms of registering new voters, etc, especially in OH.

17. you might want to do a bit more reading here
You might have a point about the evangelicals but I find it hard to believe there are many who haven't already been converted to voting the Republican ticket. With the zeal for funds that people like Pat Robertson and Jerry Falwell have, I would think that group is pretty well tapped out. I did hear republicans registered 20,000 evangelicals in Michigan, however, so perhaps not.

Regardless, bush has so many people up in arms that I think it could be enough to counteract the evangelicals. See the thread that appeared this evening that tells about Googling "against Bush:"

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph...

Re Ohio, you should read some of the threads on the turnout for the Kerry/Edwards rally tonight. It sounds like it was an overwhelming success. To get those kind of numbers for a rally held at that time is impressive.

Re Missouri, this is purely anecdotal but we had a DU-er who, as part of a Democratic phone bank, called heavily Republican areas of Missouri. She reports that 50% of the Republicans said they were voting for Kerry. This was not just her calls, it was representative of all the phone bankers calling that area.

I think I know where you are coming from. I will describe your perspective as "brutal realism". We need that around here. Hope you stick around.

4. Awful, it's getting panned in the media
Edited on Fri Sep-03-04 02:06 AM by quinnox
AP and Washington Post are dissecting it, and saying it left much to be desired. Most people will get their impression of the speech from the media and won't bother to watch it. The ratings for the RNC have been just a little better than the DNC, which were extremely low.

Zell's speech was even worse of course and got such terrible publicity the Bush campaign had to distance themselves from it. What a fiasco for Bush and his supporters. I wouldn't be surprised to see no bounce or if one at all, a tiny one.

13. Me, too, Leilani
And my husband, too! I heard a few snippets here and there as I faded from consciousness to unconsciousness. Then my husband, "Turn that b%#%:(* off! I'm not going to sleep with him!" So I guess I was "moved"....to hit the remote.

29. Reading the accounts this AM
it was all delivery, no substance....and the delivery was only fiffully adequate.

What's ironic is that after all these years of Anybody But Bush, in the end the only reason the Republicans can produce to urge you to vote for Junior Flyboy is that he is Anybody But Kerry.

31. Gotta give the devil his due -- he was good
This was an effective speech. He hit all his main points. They were simple, easily understood and he conveyed passion and purpose.

This goes to show that we misunderestimate this guy at our own peril. The Republicans are very good at this sort of thing.
