*snicker* I see the GOP is running from Zell like a scalded dog..
GOP backs away from Miller’s blast
Democrat ‘speaking for himself,’ Bush aide says
MSNBC and NBC News
Updated: 11:11 p.m. ET Sept. 2, 2004After gauging the harsh reaction from Democrats and Republicans alike to Sen. Zell Miller’s keynote address at the Republican National Convention, the Bush campaign — led by the first lady — backed away Thursday from Miller’s savage attack on Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry, insisting that the estranged Democrat was speaking only for himself.
Late Thursday, Miller and his wife were removed from the list of dignitaries who would be sitting in the first family’s box during the president’s acceptance speech later in the evening. Scott Stanzel, a spokesman for the Bush campaign, said Miller was not in the box because the campaign had scheduled him to do too many television interviews.

There was no explanation, however, for why Miller would be giving multiple interviews during Bush’s acceptance speech, or what channels would snub the president in favor of Miller. Nor was it made clear why Miller’s wife also was not allowed to take her place in the president’s box 24 hours after his deeply personal denunciation of his own party’s nominee.

1. It's kinda clever
First have Zell go out on stage and rant like a madman. This appeals to the nut case fundies. Next have a few prominent republicans come out and distance themselves from it. This goes well with moderates that don't pay attention to much.

Very Rovian.

2. HA! Terrific!!!
Crazy Old Zell had a home with the Repubs for less than 1 day!!!

They used him & then tossed him aside.

David Gergen was right; said Zell began his career as a racist Maddox man, & finished his career on hate.

5. Did you see Laura Ingraham and David Gergen

almost come to blows discussing Zell? It was quite funny.

There are big cracks in the Repukes... the moderates really hate
the fundies and neocons. They want to return to repukes as
genteel owners of everything, debating with the patrician Democrats
in polite society (the decorum of the old Senate). These fundy
repukes with their interventionist imperialism scare the piss
out of them. The repukes are better at papering over these
cracks than the Dems/Progressives. But sometimes you catch some
reality seeping into the media, like the confrontation between
Ingraham and Gergen (god help me, Scarborough played "moderate" and
refereed the fight). It was good.

This time, it's not the fundies that will stay home and not vote
for shrubya, it's the fiscal conservatives who don't like the huge
deficits and foreign adventures that will stay home (or maybe
secretly vote for Kerry).

Just my opinion. I have no data to support it. Just a feeling.

8. Agree with you completely.
yes, I saw Gergen vs Ingraham...more entertaining TV, brought to us by the hatemongers.

Gergen is a voice of moderation & reason amidst a party that is now out of control. They sold their souls to the Fundies for their votes, & they will reap the whirlwind.

George Will had a recent column about how the Goldwater voices are getting stronger in the party. Strong defense, fiscal discipline, & libertarian on abortion & gays.

I hope he is right, because things have become poisonous.

13. You are right about Republican cracks. Drive wedges in them.
There are many issues they don't all agree on.

Debt and Deficit is a huge issue to pound a wedge into.
Peel the fiscal conservatives off from the social conservatives.

Pound on the Iraq war issue: costs in lives and treasure, international reputation, and freshly minted terrorists who will be with us for a generation.

Pound on the broken promises and the misleader in chief.

6. Vidkun Quisling will be better remembered than this Lester Maddox protege
David Gergen is right: he went back to his roots, and he'll be remembered for this deceitful hate-filled rant. The very idea of being all sweet and contrite afterward and feigning surprise at being characterized as angry showed him as the liar of the soul that he is, and a laughable poseur at that.

12. More like dogs with gasoline on their assholes.
The Republicans can "distance" themselves as much as they like, but I'll bet most people didn't even know who Zell was before the other night. I'd also wager most people will still make the common sense connection that whatever that Internet glurge spreading redneck was before Wednesday, he's gasoline on the Republican asshole today. Hey, they invited him not just to speak, but to give the keynote address.

They can run, whine, and try to lick him off, but Zell is spread all over the Republican Party now.

Feel the burn, ya slime tossers.

18. Zell just "speaking for himself"
No one knows how he got the keynote spot at the Republican National Convention. Just sort of, you know, happened.

"Speaking for himself" -- pfff! And these are the self-styled grown-ups? My sweet Aunt Fanny.
