I have waited 3 years and 9 months for this moment. I have waited patiently and with a long memory ever since December 12, 2000.
An illegitimate, election rigging fraud took over our White House. A man so afraid of democracy that, not only did he not want to count all of our votes, but did his best to keep many of us from even casting a vote at all.
A liar who pretended to be a moderate, and took office on moderate votes, immediately tried to push a backwards, conservative agenda down an evenly divided nation's throats. He did many unseamly things, such as devising energy policy with only his personal oil interests represented in closed meetings, and then trying to open up one our nation's most precious, beautiful, and irreplaceable natural resources to drilling for those private interests. He had stolen our votes, and now he was out to rob us of everything else. And of course there is Iraq. But the one thing that sticks out in my mind, even before Iraq, is his attempt to get Miguel Estrada on track to the Supreme Court.
One of his trusted accomplices in the challenge to Al Gore's worthy and necessary recount, Estrada represented a cynical, yet transparent, attempt to shift the Supreme Court firmly into the molding hands of Scalia, under the guise of 'ethnic diversity'.
But the Democrats rallied. They stood firm. They drew the line. Despite intense pressure from a mocking nucleus of Republican Senators lead by Orrin Hatch, they did not let the nomination come to a vote, and Estrada was eventually forced to resign. We won. The nation won. But I was left with a palpable and fearful sense that the next such confrontation might not turn out so well. I thought: 'we cannot go on this way for another year and a half', and certainly not for another 5. No. This must end. We need help.
And so I look to John Kerry. I look to the man who saw Vietnam from both sides- as a warrior and a peace maker. I look to the man who likewise looked to John F. Kennedy for his inspiration and guidance. I look to the man who wanted to serve his country and did serve his country with honor and distinction- and continued to do so for his entire career all the way into the United States Senate.
Bill Clinton said when the battle is toughest and hardest, we should send John Kerry. And in every instance we did send John Kerry. When Ronald Reagan was trying to fight an illegal war in secret, John Kerry was there to expose it. When terrorists were trying to create their own bank, John Kerry was there to stop them. And now there is a new fight, and John Kerry is here to lead us in that fight, and he has proven he is ready to fight.
John Kerry, I am behind you 1000%. I will talk to 1000 people, I will walk a hundred miles to get you into the white house. John Kerry, I am reporting for duty.
