Reader K.H shrewdly notes that Dick Cheney said last night that the men and women of the military 'have lost comrades, more than 1,100 brave Americans, whose memory this nation will honor forever.' Cheney arrived at the "more than 1,100" figure by aggregating casualties from Iraq and Afghanistan. Right now the Iraq death count stands somewhere in the high 900s and will surely pass 1,000 before Election Day, virtually ensuring some press coverage that won't reflect well on the administration. Unless, that is, they can convince the media that the 1,000 threshold passed months ago and there's nothing to cover. I certainly don't recall Cheney speaking about 'more than 900' casualties back when the combined figure was approaching 1,000. -- Matthew Yglesias"
