MSNBC: "Bush needed to give a good speech, and he did."
http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/09/03/watson.friday/index.html

NEW YORK (CNN) -- President Bush needed to give a good speech, and he did.

His tone was confident and relaxed, and he nimbly handled several hot topics -- including his own shortcomings, from his grasp of English to his "swagger."

Politically, Bush hit each of the three goals he needed to meet entering the convention: make terrorism the race's dominant issue and depict Kerry as too risky to protect the nation; reframe his record on the economy and the Iraq war; and convince voters that he has a new and compelling agenda.

The president clearly energized his conservative base and, all in all, capped a generally solid Republican convention. (Special report: America Votes 2004, the Republican convention)

10. Ding ding ding! DenverDem, you're our grand prize winner!
...a passionless perfunctionary reading...

He just walked out there and read script that had been written for him. I thought his attitude was too detached.

The speech was the same recycled bill of goods he's peddleing but not delivered since 2000. I don't know why so many people are impressed--because he sounded so much better? He OUGHT to, after saying the same crap over and over again for four years!

2. From his grasp of English?
Jeez, he's getting points because he read his speech properly?

Glad to see things like, oh I don't know, content, aren't being considered a major facet.

7. sad, and bush* gets points for BRAGGING about his failure to

grasp English, and put together REAL sentences, with actual nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs in the correct locations....

bush* also bragged to a graduating class at Yale, explaining how proud he was to be a "C" student....

time to boot these idiots OUT....

4. If he "clearly energized his conservative base"
Why was the crowd so morose? Sure they clapped and hollered 4 more years a few times, but they weren't smiling.

6. I saw one "reaction" shot of Karen Hughes in the crowd...
...she wasn't smiling AT ALL. I don't know if she was surveying the crowd reaction or what, but she looked pretty damned severe.

5. What he says doesn't mean anything anyway...
I remember him sounding rather moderate in 2000.

I watched it, expecting to get all fired up, and just ended up getting bored and zoning out.
