Kerry's rally last night converted a Republican
It was my hairdresser. I just got back from my appointment. She knows how I feel about politics as I have been going to her for many years. She is a Nazarene and a "Fox watcher" She is not really into politics that much, but she like to visit, as many hairdressers seem to do.

She said..."I'm so confused. Last night I watched Bush speak, and then I watched the Kerry rally. Kerry really made some good points.
I think the Republicans may be telling lies." ( !!)

That was my opening. I filled her in on the half-truths about the SwiftLiars, Zell, etc. Then I asked her if she thought that Kerry should fight back. She said...."Well, I don't think I can vote for Bush...I never liked him, but I didn't know that much about Kerry."
He impressed me last night and 'course that Edwards guy is kinda' cute."

That one rally made a difference to this one person!

3. i dont see how anyone who sees a Kerry rally doesnt convert
Kerry rallies are full of hope, optimism and truth. I wish the networks would cover some of them. That would really swing the vote. And the thing is, a lot of what he said last night is very much the same as he was saying in town meetings in New Hampshire and Iowa in the primaries.

The media has done one hell of a job of presenting a FALSE Kerry. More people need to just see him talk.

6. She said it was the line about
two tours of duty versus Cheney's five deferments that really got to her.

She didn't know any of that.

exactly what Kerry said last night. They want to talk about war records? Fine. We can take them on ANY day.

11. Definitely time the deferments got more coverage
You can also mention to her General McPeak's (former U.S. Air Force chief of staff) comment:

"Tonight we're going to hear from a guy who obtained five deferments ," McPeak said, referring to Cheney. Attorney General John Ashcroft obtained seven deferments, McPeak added. "That's about a dozen between the two of them," McPeak said. "Where are the 12 guys who went to Vietnam in their place? Maybe some of them didn't come back." Red meat, anyone?

13. I really believe that as Kerry shows his fighting spirit inthe stretch
we're going to see more and more of this.

The voters that are swayed by personality and not policy will see him as the fighter that he is, and the lies Bush and his cronies are dishing out are just piling up too high.

How many times have you heard 'Dems are wimps'? Well, Kerry's coming out swinging.

Calling out 'Mad Dog' Cheney for his five deferments? How many times have you heard a Dem pol actually say that out loud? How's THAT for wimpy?

Go John GO!!!

15. I agree....
I think Kerry may have been strategically holding back, giving the Chimp his week of glory, and NOW, when the Chimp is off of the podium, Kerry will go for the cajones.

In a lot of ways, it's downhill for Bush from here on out. We all KNOW he's going to suck at the Debates.

My concerns remaining are:
- pulling Bin Laden out of a hat at the 11th hour
- over-hyping Kerry's anti-War efforts
- emphasizing the liberal policies of Kerry's home state regarding gay rights

Given that they've already dished so much dirt and it hasn't really been effective, I have doubts that they can do too much more. But those 3 things worry me. Many thought that, in addition to the Dean scream, that it was his stance on civil unions that killed him. I don't want to see it kill Kerry.

precisely because he's such a looker that he can easily corner the female vote!

17. My New 4-Step Cure For Sheeplism....
Most people don't know how badly they've been lied to. They grow up, especially those in religious homes, to respect authority and not question it. It takes a great leap of faith to do that...especially amont those with strong Repugnican ties. The concept of questioning is difficult enough and voting against a Repugnican is beyond sight for most.

However, I've been finding that, if done subtly, minds can be enlightened and rational thinking occurs. Instead of beating these people over with facts and 4 years of this regime's dirty laundry (that's way too much for most), I've found a gentle coax gets some interesting results.

First step is to engage and listen. Let the person feel they're telling you and trying to convert & convince you (warning: this is for only true believers...don't try this after too many shot or bongs) and get things out of their system. When they're talked out (and most will...I say most), then it's question time. A simple question about a simple point. Like "you say Kerry's a flip-flopper...how is that?"...let them restate what you've probably heard a million times. Then ask them if you can show your cards. Just simple steps at first. I suggest going to a Snopes or Disinfopedia...sites that are straight forward.

Step Two: find out if they've seen the sites and see if they can counter. Again...careful. Don't dismiss a link to a Newsmuck or WorldNet out of hand and play along. Soon, if you've been patient, you'll see the first elements of doubt creep in. Try to have them reconcile what you found with what he/she found. Now you've put the onus on them to back up what they say in an intelligent way. Watch the wheels turn.

Step Three: Compare & Contrast. Now, providing the person is willing to go give and take with you...it's time to sneak in the old Devil's Advocate. Yep...you get to play Bunnypants...but then they get to play Kerry. When they try to go outside the boundries Kerry has to play, you then say "gotcha". Yep...be Rovian as all hell. Lie, deceive, divert. Watch the person get frustrated. And then watch them start to see how this is happening to Kerry...and watch a light go on.

Step Four: Once they're open to examining this regime's record and question...bring 'em here!!! Yep, DU! If it's a freeper, they're probably familiar with this place anyway. Start 'em with LBN and the Editorials...swing 'em into the State section and Lounge. Let them find these forums on their own (LOL).

I've done this with several people...and it takes time. Usually several weeks, and the first couple are living hell. But I've always found that if you give a person a chance to have their say and feel you've listened, they will take the time to hear you out as well.

Congrats on your hard work, Nancy...and to the many, many other DU'ers who are helping spread truths where lies and deceptions lie. No matter how this election turns out, you may have opened up a mind that could mean more understanding ahead.

Cheers!

20. I agree with everything but your comment on websites
These people don't go to websites. I doubt Alice ( my hairdresser) even has a computer. Her husband may, as he works as an executive at American Airlines.

She's a nice person even if she is a Repub. I've seen her over the years soften a bit too as she has had some difficulties with her three daughters ( one had an abusive husband) She is certainly not as judgmental as she was ten years ago.....and she told me that she doesn't believe politics should be involved in the abortion situation, even though her preacher says it's wrong.

19. Scarbrain on MSNBC last night was annoyed that
Kerry was talking about so many facts and numbers! He'd rather have Kerry speak in bland generalities like Bush does.
