Mich. Court: Nader Should Be on Ballot
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Ralph Nader should be allowed on the
Michigan ballot as an independent candidate for president, the
Michigan Court of Appeals ruled Friday.
Nader earlier had lost a bid to get on the Michigan ballot as
the Reform Party's presidential candidate.
U.S. District Court Judge Bernard Friedman ruled Wednesday that
Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land could not be expected to decide
which of two rival Reform Party factions in Michigan was the proper
representative. One has nominated Nader, but Land has said she
wouldn't recognize the nomination until the two factions decide
which one was the legitimate representative.
The case involving Nader's independent candidacy wound up in the
appeals court because the Board of State Canvassers couldn't
decide. The board deadlocked 2-2 on whether the 50,000 votes turned
in to get Nader on the ballot should be certified.
Republicans on the board voted to certify Nader, while Democrats
voted against him.
State election officials were working Friday to ensure Nader
would appear on the Nov. 2 ballot.
