A thread on DU that says you should not give a crap about Sarah Palin's SAT scores? :eyes:

Are you guys for real? She is running for VICE PRESIDENT.

I am just out of words right now. When will we learn?

1. I bet their SAT scores were lower
When you received a composite score in the 700s, a score of 840 isn't so bad.

15. Hey now...
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 12:19 PM by kwolf68
Not really. My first SAT score was 896....of course, my effort on it was severely lacking.

I went back to take the test a few months later and scored 1290-something. So maybe Palin was just 'lazy' that day. It's funny that I remember my shitty SAT score, but can't remember what I got on my SAT exam that actually GOT ME INTO college. Had I stuck with the 896 I 'may have' been able to go to a community college.

26. okay.
You are right that the ability to score well or not on any standardized test is not necessarily indicative of one's intelligence. But she's still stupid. ;)

14. Holy shit!
She got an 840? Combined?

OMG - how the hell did I miss that thread?

I think the person who said the people who rec'ced the thread probably scored lower is right.

I got lower than her - 50 points lower... IN ENGLISH! To put her scores in perspective for people who don't know how the old system used to work, combined score possibility used to be 1600, 800 in math, 800 in English.

I got a 790 in English, so I almost scored higher than her if I only used half the test. Math, I didn't do so hot - 670.

She is an utter and complete fucking moron.

3. I'm tired of nagging nellies telling me not to talk about things.
This is a message board. We come here to talk and even gossip. In the past week we've been nagged relentlessly. We've been told not to talk about McCain's race-baiting, not to talk about Palin's stupidity, not to talk about McCain's failing health, and I don't know what else. All these things actually are relevant.

What are we supposed to talk about?

12. i've been told
not to talk about McLame crashing 4 (or is it 5?) planes.

I've been told not to talk about the fact that he ratted out our Military while a POW pretty much the second he was dragged out of the water.

I've been told not to talk about McSame graduating near the bottom of his class.

I've been told not to talk about the possibility of Palin's latest child being her daughter's.

I'll not apologize for speculating a little. This is a discussion board. I'm not offended if people tell me to shut up. If they've got a good reason for telling me to, i might even listen.

:)

25. Oh yes I've been slapped for mentioning several of those as well.
I got in big trouble for speculating that Trig is probably Briston's son. And some of DU's resident aviation experts let me have it for mentioning McCain's abilities as a pilot.

I guess I'm just a bitchy gossip!

are they added up?

my son got like
530 reading
510 writing
385 in math

this wa 7th grade, last year for him. so i am not sure how it all works and didnt pay much attention because it was just play for him and we didnt take it seriously. he won state recognition for his reading, just shy for his writing.

curious, cause this would beat palin, bah hahahha and he was 12. lol

but then we have high regard and respect for education and smarts.

13. Here's my problem with focusing on SAT scores.
Missed whatever thread you're referring to by the way.

Some of us find standardized tests fundamentally flawed for many reasons.

1. They only test limited types of intelligences.
2. Their standardization by definition is going to generate a certain degree of bias.
3. With the right kind of preparation there are ways to boost your score without requiring an increase in knowledge or intelligence.
4. They are a disservice to intelligent individuals who simply have test phobia or are plagued with the anxiety of test pressure.

I know positively brilliant people with common sense and integrity oozing from every pore who tanked on the SAT for any combination of the above.

I know utter morons without an iota of common decency or street smarts who whizzed through the SAT.

If you want to use it as one example of her stupidity, so be it. I just would use it as one tiny example in a long litany of examples of her lack of ability and judgment.

So yes, I probably am among those who don't give a crap about her SAT scores. Mostly because if she had high scores I'd not consider them indicative of her intelligence because I don't think she has much. And if she had low scores I'd shrug and think, "No kidding. One more clue she's an idiot." Sorry, but I have to be honest and say they're virtually meaningless to me. And I had a combined 1410. ;) The math portion killed me!

18. I want someone with good grades who took challenging courses and better yet...
wants to surround him or herself with people who are even smarter. I want to see examples of good judgment indicative of high intelligence, not just an ability to score well on a test. I want to see someone who put hard work into it, but the "top school" isn't a dealbreaker with me. Plenty of brilliant people couldn't afford top schools or chose not to leave home to get their education. Honors program and graduating summa cum laude from a state university is fine with me. No need to travel to Boston or Connecticut. Cheers!

24. All true. The report - which may or may not be real - also showed very poor grades.
As you say, none of this would matter if Palin exhibited any sign of intelligence or intellectual curiosity. It's interesting only because it reinforces what we already know.

19. I guess 11 people think we shouldn't attack darling Sitcom Sarah.
That thread said that golly, we should just attack McLiar.

Seemingly unaware that of course we are attacking him by singling out more confirmation that his choice of an unqualified Christian fundamentalist showed poor judgment and rash decision making that we don't want in our next Commander in Chief.

1. The letters are perfectly even; each W is a pixel-perfect clone of each other W, each A for A, and so on. Actual daisywheel printouts show considerable variation in line shading and thickness. Modern inkjet and laser printouts do not.

2. Her GPA is listed as 2.2; that seems unreasonable, given that she is on record as being a member of her high school's honor society.
