Trying to Snuff Out the Flame

At a rally late today in Minnesota, John McCain addressed the heated comments, including calls to violence, coming from some supporters at his rallies this week:

"I am enthusiastic and encouraged by the enthusiasm and I think it's really good," McCain said. "We have to fight and i will fight but we will be respectful. I admire Sen. Obama and his accomplishments and I want to be respectful.

Late Update: Ana Marie Cox is on the ground at the rally and reports:

Indeed, just snatched the microphone out the hands of a woman who began her question with, "I'm scared of Barack Obama... he's an Arab terrorist..."

"No, no ma'am," he interrupted. "He's a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements."

Later Update: In the expanded version of the video above, I don't hear any reference to terrorist when the woman calls Obama an Arab.

Just days ago, McCain was gleefully whipping his followers into a frenzy with his talk of Obama's ties to Ayers, allowing the crowd to chant "Terrorist!" and "Kill him!" Now, with far less enthusiasm, he's defending Obama? That tells me he saw from the polling how poorly this was turning out and has, yet again, decided to switch tactics. But people have video and can remember him taking part and that's what I'll remember more than his new defense of Obama.

He handled it all so poorly, despite his seemingly good effort. Why is he so surprised at what he's unleashed? Didn't he know where this would lead, or did he underestimate the vitriol?
