I spent a few minutes talking across the fence with my neighbors. They are good people. But the things they see in the media leave them quite confused. I certainly couldn't explain the bailout. But by the time I explained that Ayers was a 60's radical hippie, who started doing his anti-establishment "blow up the government" crap back when Obama was 8, they were as angry as I was. They knew they'd been mislead. Oh, and hippie is a code word for white. But I threw that in there, too.
Then, the 94 times raising taxes. Taxes on who? Taxes on what? If Obama wants to tax big business, is that so bad? If Obama wants to tax the wealthy, are you still mad at him? And if it took 10 times for the bill to pass, then all over a sudden, they've expanded what's really 1 time into ten.
When I got finished, they were pretty disgusted with the smears. People don't like being misled.
Obama has alway said that we win with a solid ground game. Talking to family, to friends, to neighbors, to co-workers. Sure, blogging works with the young generation. Letters to the Editor work with people who read the paper. But it's the simple act of having a conversation that really makes a difference.
So, please have those conversations. Reach out to those who *don't* use the Internet. I am so proud of each person on DU who talks about the change in heart of a loved one, because we continued to talk to them. And they got it. And were pissed that "McCain thinks you're stupid."
Why are they smearing Obama? Because they think you're stupid. And the American people are NOT as dumb as the Republicans wish they were.
Please keep having those conversations.
