I almost predicted McCain's backing away from his campaign's racism.
Five days ago in DU, I almost predicted that McCain would step back from the brink as his campaign started to unleash the racist subconcious in the conservative third of America. Or maybe McCain actually read my DU post! How awesome would that be!

(Please, do not shatter my delusions)

I don't think most Republicans are outright racists--I think they're just scared people misled into paranoia about "the other" by dishonest leaders. I think they're ordinary people hoodwinked into being scared about the future because Republican leaders can make a hell of a lot of money with their mitts on the public treasury.

McCain is a Goldwater Republican, a real conservative rather than that fake sort of social conservative who denounces big government while making government bigger and making a profit from the hypocricy of it all. McCain earned his money the old fashioned way. Wink-wink, nudge-nudge.

McCain himself may be prejudiced (yet who among us isn't?) but he's not willing to preach racism and when he saw that was exactly what he was doing, he backed away from that one woman--one of the manipulated masses--who was scared into thinking Obama is an Arab terrorist. McCain could see up close and personal how his own campaign's fearmongering was getting dangerous.

The little supressed grown up in him took over at that moment and said, "No, no ma'am, he's a decent family man with whom I happen to have some disagreements." Was it smart politics to damp down that sort of hatred? Of course--putting the country first is usually smart politics, especially after the primary season. But for once we see a republican actually putting country first rather than simply mouthing the words and doing the exact opposite.

Oh, he'll probably get lauded on the Sunday talk shows for this reality check. It's "the old McCain back in charge," you'll see George Will say. It won't do McCain much good, since the sane vote is already breaking toward Obama and mostly he'll have just pissed off his own loonies. But at least for the moment he's not being a dick. Opponent or not, I'm glad he did it.

1. Personally, I think he decided he didn't want to be the new head of the KKK after all.
He has to think of his reputation you know.

2. Well, maybe Palin will get that in 2012
Oops, her hubby's part Inuit. Bet that cuts her out of the Klan too. Poor kid.

3. Call It For What It Really Is - A Lynch Mob
Raw hatred fueled by bigotry - are we too politically sensitive to call what McCain's hordes really want.

4. I'm with you on that -- I'm very glad he did it too
As a matter of fact, I said something similar at the end of a recent post:

6. He should of done it DAYS ago when he clearly heard someone yell out "Terrorist!"
Instead, he just made a little grimace and went on with his fear-inducing race-baiting stump speech.

The ONLY reason he spoke up is pressure from the Secret Service. Bet on it.

John McCain is SCUM. Always has been, always will be.
