7. both were excellant for different reasons
The democratic speaker gave a good insight on where democrats want America to go, he spoke of unity and working together. On the other hand the GOP speaker also gave an good insight on the GOP being "mad men"

2. Obviously Obama gave a better speech

but Zell gave a speech that will be better for the Democrats!
(but only if we keep it in the public eye)

16. You got that right
Zell should be tied to the Republicans like a tin can to a dog's tail.

They're trying to distance themselves from the cracker turncoat, but he's the real face of the Republican party and they shouldn't be allowed to hide it.

Zell's a Republican "moderate," now.

4. Of course Zell might actually get us as many votes as Obama
Not that that was his intention of course. :-)

8. Agreed
Zig Zag Zell preached to the choir. How many more votes inside of Madison Square Garden did he convert to the bush camp.

Obama was a heartwarming speech that reached out to the undecided. I would love to have the future Obama has. A star is born.

11. "Better"? Obama without question. But Zell will swing more votes.
Positive remarks are too quickly forgotten. An attack like we saw from Zell sticks with people.

But in terms of oratory and shear inspiration, Obama takes the field walking away.

12. Is there any factual basis for your comment?
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 11:02 AM by Feanorcurufinwe
Or is it mere speculation?

Positive remarks are too quickly forgotten.

Like MLK's "I Have a Dream Speech" or the Gettysburg Address?

14. Any votes won on either of those speeches?
No, it's not speculation.

Look at the polls.

19. ?
You said Positive remarks are too quickly forgotten.

and I mentioned the Gettysburg address, MLK's "I have a dream" speech. Other memorable speeches I can think of offhand are JFK's "New Frontiers" speech or Clinton's "A place called Hope"... clearly these do not support the notion that i]Positive remarks are too quickly forgotten.

I also take issue with the notion that negative remarks are always great vote-getters, Buchanan's "Culture War", Goldwater's "Extremism in the defense of liberty" leap to mind...

18. Pat Buchanan's 1992 speech stuck with people, too
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 12:38 PM by no name no slogan
It showed that the Repubs were a bunch of fear-mongering, knee-jerk reactionaries who had no tolerance for anything that was not white, christian or midwestern. And we all know how well THAT one came out for them.

15. Zell Miller 2004 == Pat Buchanan 1992
Zell's performance was AMAZING. Short of Pat B.'s famous speech at the RNC in 1992, I don't think I've seen so much hate compressed into so short a time. Even better was his appearence on Hardball, where he challenged Tweety to a duel. That KICKED ASS!

Zell may have done more to help the Democrats this year than any speech given at the DNC. It was like the zookeeper tossing bloody meat into the lions den. I've never seen so many people, with so much priviledge, be so angry about their situation. Unfreakingbelievable.
