RACIST billboard against Obama in Missouri!!!
Edited on Mon Oct-13-08 05:23 AM by proud2Blib

Obama caricature causes uproar in southern Missouri

A billboard in West Plains showing a caricature of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing a turban and using his middle name -- Hussein -- in quotes has sparked outrage and accusations of racism.

The sign, located south of West Plains on U.S. 63 across from the Dairy Queen, says: "Barack 'Hussein' Obama equals more abortions, same sex marriages, taxes, gun regulations."

Outrage over the sign triggered West Plains resident Becky Estes to write a letter in Monday's edition of the Daily Quill newspaper saying "such a tasteless display merely reinforces the wide-spread belief that Ozarkers are ignorant country bumpkins."

"People don't like it. They're embarrassed by that sign, ashamed by that sign, horrified by that sign and outraged by that sign," Estes told the News-Leader on Thursday.

Estes' letter sparked responses from locals and out-of-state former residents in Wednesday's newspaper. The person who created the sign remains anonymous.

And a comment following the story:
What kind of idiot would put up a sign like that? Well, folks, what the News-Leader did not report, is that Ronnie Ford of Howell County owns the land and putup the sign. I pretty well thought that the image of a ignorant, lazy, Ozarks hillbilly had finally been left in the cartoons, but I guess not. Mr. Ford has adapted the image for himself.

Unapologetic Liberal

10. Yes, there are, but there is an upside
There are a shitload of Obama yard signs down here too. Way more than McCain signs. It's just the ignorant racist fucks get all the attention.

Missouri will be a lot bluer this election.

we are going to need more blue votes from the rest of MO.

16. Agreed....people in SW and many parts of rural MO
are probably applauding this guy for doing what they'd do if they had the land and money.

I loath these people.

3. "They're embarrassed by that sign, ashamed by that sign, horrified by that sign."
Yet someone thought of it, designed it, painted it and installed it.

Seems like there are enough people in that chain of events who agreed with it.

But they are right about one thing. It does nothing to dispel the belief that Ozarkers (is that a real word?) are IGNORANT (emphasis mine) country bumpkins.

Having said that - I do love the Ozarks. But this is truly one of the lowest things that I have seen.

We used to go camping and canoeing down there quite a bit. But it has changed, just like there is more crime in KC, which keeps people from coming here.

7. Is the KKK active in SW Missouri?
Yes. Does everyone belong to it? No.

Unless the Southern Poverty Law Center is also now considered out of date, its a good place to look at the hate map and check out the hate in your own state. That might be more beneficial than starting a "beat on up Missouri" thread which, let me remind you, is one of the battleground states. (not entirely gentle hint for some of you to look in the mirror at your own locale)

17. Just makin a point - the sign is disgusting. It reflects poorly not only on it's
creator, but those who condone and approve of its message.

It is also a misleading untrue caricature of a fine American senator. It is a lie and it is the same kind of fear mongering hatred that has been roiling at the mCLame campaign events lately.

34. Why are you getting all over people?
Seriously, not trying to start an argument here. I say what I say about Missouri as a person who grew up in those parts. There are still parts of Missouri that a black person would be crazy to travel though during the dead of night. I do not think that is beating up on Missouri that is a fact. Missouri may be a battleground state but it does not take away the fact that a large segment of the state houses quite a few redneck, racist, idiots; racist idiots that I doubt would vote for Obama no matter what you said (good or bad) about Missouri.

35. I'm tired of watching people looking for someone or someplace to attack.
The fact that they are democrats or that there might be democrats there doesn't seem to matter any more. Additionally, when yo do this you're fracturing the party for a few moments for a few moments of feeling personally superior. That's not good, it's not right, it's not even accurate.

39. stupid question from someone from Illinois?
but what is so dangerous about driving around at night? Would the cops pull you over for driving while black? Would folks who passed your car actually take the time out of their lives to turn around and chase you down and shoot you? I grew up in the state just across the river, Illinois, but way up north in the suburbs of Chicago. I know the cops hassled black people for driving nice cars where I lived but is it really that much worse in Missouri??

22. This makes me glad. More now than in a long time, the RNC is forced to see their base ...
... and everyone else gets to see it too. It drives people away from the Republican ticket as it disgusts moderates and shames conservatives. I'm happy the nutcases are visible. They're like the gimp from Pulp Fiction that the RNC uses to win elections. But now the gimp is free and the RNC is frantically trying to put him back in his footlocker.

26. From what I could find
he's had to recently change his phone number. Seems like he was getting hammered by some who thought maybe it was WRONG to put up that sign. To my knowledge, it's still standing. He originally told the press that he did not know who put it up, however he owns the land. Then neighbors said they SAW him put it up. So, if he didn't put it up, why let it remain? He's a coward to take credit for the sign he put up and lied about it's origin thinking what, that it's then okay to let it remain...........

I agree it's a little over the top.

Hussein should not be in quotes, it's his name not a nickname.

The turban should be much wider, like in that e-mail snapshot taken of him when he was wearing traditional Kenyan gear. We've never seen his head dressed in bandages like he's suffered severe head trauma. (Though tht would explain some things...)

He doesn't equal more same sex marriages, that's a wash. The other three he supports though.

And... the ears need to be bigger. This is a caricature after all.

33. On a similar note... in Chester County, PA (Philly suburbs)
yesterday I saw a big pimped out pickup truck (deer spotting lights, lots of chrome, etc.) in the parking lot at BJ's.

On the tailgate was a big sign... as big as the entire tailgate, that said:

OBAMA = OSAMA

DON'T LET HIM FOOL YOU

I had a fit. Caught a glimpse of the driver, white 50-something male.

I was incensed. :banghead:

My only consolation was that it was a business truck, and I'm hoping he LOSES a lot of business because of it.
