whoooooa! Isn't that what Bush says when he speaks. For years the south has been STUCK in this oppressive thought. As someone who was born and raised in the south and still lives here--desperately trying to understand it---we really haven't come that far. Bush speech last night was hollow. It was hollow with compassion or else he would know what the south needs. Hollow with meaning or else he would know that what you say--you do. Hollow with substance--it doesn't take another four years to do what you SHOULD HAVE ALREADY DONE.

1. The South votes against its own interests

Every time it votes for conservative politicians.

What does the south have to show for voting for the wingnuts? The lowest wages and worst public education in the whole country.

Unfortunately, the pukes do well there because they know how to fan the flames of regional xenophobia and religious intolerance that still plague Southern thinking.

And lest I be accused of being an uppity Californian, I lived in the south for 11 years.

3. SPITE voters.

Millions and millions of them electing SPITE Presidents and SPITE senators and SPITE representatives by the truckload to band together and govern in SPITE. You can't really expect much in return for your SPITE vote.
