Coward!!! Bush May Only Agree to 2 Debates
Bush's camp may cut 1 debate

Billy House
Republic Washington Bureau
Sept. 3, 2004 12:00 AM

NEW YORK - Could Tempe find itself the odd location out for the upcoming presidential debates?

President Bush's campaign won't say for sure whether he will agree to the three debates proposed by the independent Commission on Presidential Debates, or if a Republican strategist was right this week when he said the Bush campaign would agree to only two debates.

The commission, without a formal agreement by the Bush camp, set debates for Sept. 30 in Coral Gables, Fla.; Oct. 8 in St. Louis; and Oct. 13 in Tempe. A vice presidential debate between incumbent Dick Cheney and Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry's running mate, North Carolina Sen. John Edwards, was set for Oct. 5 in Cleveland.

GOP strategist Scott Reed was quoted by the Reuter news agency this week as saying the Bush camp's position is that "two debates are sufficient and will not dominate the entire fall schedule."

1. Can't they be a little closer to the election?
I mean the last debate is scheduled for almost a month before the election. Believe me, I want the debates fresh on the minds of the voters on Nov. 2.

4. Playing the expectations game?
Maybe the plan here is to go ahead with all three, and just pretend to consider dropping one so it seems they want to avoid putting Bush in a debate situation....

5. What a coward. Bush doesn't want his positions on the issues
to be on voters' minds.

6. Simple restating of his message might appear too obvious by the 3rd debate

9. And we will agree not to talk about military service...
and we will not engage in any personal attacks...and we will not say anything about Halliburton...and we will get all questions in advance...and we want to make sure we don't have an "unfriendly" audience..

Then, if we don't do well in the first debate, we only have to prepare for one more debate. Two debates should be to our advantage...

10. Possibly smart strategy
Edited on Sat Sep-04-04 02:50 PM by depakote_kid
if he's ahead in the polls- and if Kerry campaign remains largely ineffectual in the media- and can't make hay out of his cowardice as Gore did- why should he debate?

If I were his handler, I'd shield him as much as possible- so long as I could get away with it.

11. Bush won't get away with it
Kerry will call him on it--saying he's afraid of his record or just can't be bothered. Bush and Gore had 3, his dad and Clinton had 3. Junior will have to debate 3 times just like everyone else.

It's a trial balloon that won't fly.

14. Bush should let Barbara and Jenna fill in for him.
At the convention the twins said they were looking for something to do now that they have finished college. Since their Daddy doesn't want to debate much, let Kerry debate him once; then debate Barbara once; and debate Jenna once. I would bet that the girls would not do any worse than their Daddy!
