ND-Pres: Another poll shows Obama lead

ND-Pres: Another poll shows Obama lead

DFM Research for the North Dakota United Transportation Union. 10/13-14. Adults. MoE 4.4% (No trend lines)

McCain (R) 41
Obama (D) 44

Two quick points -- there's no need for a voter registration screen in North Dakota because the state does not have any voter registration. Anyone over the age of 18 can vote as long as they've lived in their precinct for 30 days. So a poll of "adults" is equivalent to a poll of "registered voters". But that's all it is, there were no "likely voter" screens applied.

We've got a poll in the field right now, so hopefully we can be the third poll in a row showing a neck-and-neck (or better) race in the state.

1. You don't have to register in ND?
What do they do? Show up with an ID and that's it? How do they track people who have already voted? I'm just curious...

3. Heres how it works...
Precincts in North Dakota maintain a list of voters who have
voted in previous elections. When a voter approaches a
polling location they are asked to provide an acceptable form
of identification. Then the election board will attempt to locate
the voter’s name on the voting list. If the voter’s name is on
the list, the voter’s name and address are verified and the voter
is then allowed to vote.

If the voter is not on the list, but an election worker knows the
voter to be a qualified elector of the precinct the poll worker
may vouch for the voter. The voter then has the right to vote.

If the voter is not on the list and no poll worker is able to vouch
for them, the voter may be challenged. As part of the
challenge, the voter is asked to sign an affidavit swearing to
the fact that he or she is a qualified elector of the precinct and
therefore qualified to vote in the precinct. If the voter agrees to
sign the affidavit, the voter must be allowed to vote. If the
voter refuses to sign the affidavit, the voter may be denied the
right to vote.

5. So, it's like same-day registration but without the paperwork
Coolness. Imagine that -- a system that trusts the voter to be an honest citizen.

I live in MN, were we have same-day registration. That's one reason why they are predicting an over 80% turnout this election!

2. poll of adults ?
Well, it shows at least that ND is indeed in play and that alone is good news. I hope a more reliable pollster can confirm it.

4. Probably explains the high number of undecideds in ND polls...
They are probably calling some people who aren't going to vote.
