Trouble is, not that many people know who Gordon LIDDY is?
Kudos to Letterman for mentioning Liddy the plumber! McCain was embarassed! However, not that many people know who Liddy is. Just another of those crooks that McCain pals around with?

Liddy's connections to John McCain
In 1998 Liddy hosted a fundraiser at his house for John McCain's re-election campaign at which guests could have their pictures taken with McCain and Liddy. Over the years, Liddy, who has referred to McCain as "an old friend," has made at least four contributions totaling $5,000 to the senator's campaigns -- including $1,000 in 2008

1. Anyone who knows who Ayers is, knows who Liddy is.
I wouldn't underestimate Liddy's "celebrity"

8. It's the Baby Boomers who would know immediately
who either of those two are. I'm not a baby boomer (born in '71) but I knew who the Weather Underground was (not the names of individual members) and I know who Liddy is but I'm also a student of political history.

52. I was born after Watergate, and I know who Liddy is
WU as well, although not any individual members.

Liddy also had a syndicated talk radio show, and Watergate came up not infrequently. He's really not that obscure.

3. I had no idea who Ayers was before it was explained to me in detail.
(And I still don't really care.)

I have a vague idea about G. Gordon Liddy, but I'm going to need a refresher.
Also, some people are too young to know.

34. Libby as a young boy liked to kill rats (torturing them a bit I think)
cook them and eat them. This came from Libby's himself, he often talked about it, and was in the movie they made about his life. Sound like anyone you have heard off. :eyes:

In case someone thinks this was done because of hunger, it was not. He came from a fairly well to do family I believe. At least they were not poor by any means. He was just weird and still is.

5. Liddy has left his imprint on American politics since the Nixon Administration.
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 12:29 AM by political_Dem
He has even had his own radio show by the very same forces who installed Rush Limbaugh. He's been in the public eye for many years.

But no one forgets what he did during Watergate.

If I were on Obama's staff, I'd run the pictures of McCain and Liddy.

Kudos for Letterman for giving McCain the one-two punch last night. He let McCain know in no uncertain terms that he was truly displeased.

Correction: Liddy is still on the air. I didn't know this fact.

20. Indeed. And that is very sad.
That's why the entire Ayres meme is troubling and rather ironic on its face. If people truly did know about McCain and his connections, they'd see him more a charlatan.

However, my hope lies with the Internet. That is the silver lining here.

42. G Gordon Liddy is a much bigger name than Ayers, by far.
Even now, after Ayers has been introduced to people. Liddy was an unseen star of the huge, wideley seen film "All The President's Men", for example.

33. Yeah, except even fewer people knew who Ayers was until it was pushed by the RW.
And Ayers didn't kill anyone; while Liddy's 1994 anti-government rantings on AM radio, including instructions to his listeners on how best to kill federal agents, were part of the environment that inspired Timothy McVeigh's bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, killing 168 (including 19 children) and wounding more than 800.

But John McCain still attended a fund-raiser on his behalf at Liddy's home in 2008, and praised Liddy in November 2007 for "adherence to the principles and philosophies that keep our nation great." Does McCain include among those principles the defiance of the rule of law and the murder of federal agents?

John McCain needs to explain exactly what his relationship with Liddy is, and whether the principles he's praising include Liddy's unrepentant defiance of the rule of law and the authority of the government.

edit: And I'd add, now... why is no one also then noting that the McCain/Palin campaign's divisive approach to winning this election, via demonization of their opponent, is just the sort of thing that ramped-up the anti-government (anti-Clinton) paranoia in the 1990s, eventually leading to the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building. Maybe this approach to politics, gaining power through division, is one of Liddy's principles praised by McCain.

38. Anyone who has a visceral reaction the Ayers will have a visceral
reaction to Liddy. If you need either of those names explained, then you weren't there and probably can't understand how those of us who were react. Those who were there probably react similarly, if conversely. We like the person, while not necessarily approving of his actions: lefties for Ayers, righties for Liddy.
