Frank Capra's most sinister depression era (pre-WWII) film, MEET JOHN DOE, is about how a group of fascists/plutocrats pick some out of work guy, write his speeches and present him as the hero-symbol of the American average man. He founds the John Doe movement which sweeps the nation. The bad guys want him to announce the formation of a third party with the top creep as the nominee.

Everything since 1980 (Reagan) has been a rehash of some antique cliche.

It's like reality was hit by a writer's strike.
