Newspaper endorsements
Are coming out now. What I want to see is a paper that has endorsed Bush the past two elections endorse OBama. Will it happen? I'd like the WSJ to endorse OB.

1. Chicago Tribune, for one.
There have been many more.

Forget about the WSJ. There is no way. They approve of McCain's scorched-earth approach.

5. Salt Lake Tribune - Endorsed shrub twice, has just endorsed Obama.

A simple choice: The nation needs Barack Obama in the White House
Tribune Editorial

Article Last Updated: 10/17/2008 08:06:04 PM MDT

The next U.S. president will lead a nation that remains embroiled in two wars and is beset by an economic meltdown more severe than any since the Great Depression.

By necessity, the country's next commander in chief must also be its mender in chief, capable of inspiring his angry and divided constituents to join together in a recovery project to restore the peace, prosperity, and self-confidence we once knew.

We fear that a lesser effort may be insufficient to reverse America's slide toward economic, political and societal chaos. The times require dramatic and comprehensive change.

The presidential candidates know it, and have made it their mantra.

Most Americans know it, and, in growing numbers, are demanding it.

The countries that have long depended upon the United States for enlightened global leadership long for it.

For the sake of all, and for those who follow us, we must have it.

The editorial board of The Salt Lake Tribune believes that Barack Obama can deliver it.

Over the 22 months since announcing his improbable candidacy, Obama has transcended his image as a mere political and racial phenomenon. Though blessed with uncommon skills as a writer and orator, he was mistakenly thought to possess too little political experience, too little backbone, and too little evidence of the tangible, and intangible, qualities we ascribe to the best of our leaders. Democrats and Republicans alike thought Hillary Clinton would make short work of him.

6. This is rich: E. Tenn Paper Asks Readers if it should Endorse ANYONE. This is from
a red, red Republican paper/part of the state. I guess they're fraid they'll lose what little readership they have left if they endorse Obama, or look like fools if they endorse McCain.

Readers have responded: CANT YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE??! LOL

http://blogs.knoxnews.com/knx/editor/2008/10/should_the_news_sentinel_endor.shtml

Should the News Sentinel endorse in the presidential race?
Presidential endorsements have been a longstanding tradition at the News Sentinel, as at most other American newspapers.

For years, the News Sentinel's endorsement was based on a majority vote among the editors and corporate executives of the E.W. Scripps Co., which owns the paper. That practice was dropped for the last presidential election. Now we are discussing whether it makes sense to make a presidential endorsement at all.

Arguments in favor of continuing the tradition: Our editorial board follows the news closely, is well-informed on the issues and has a strong sense of the community, so our opinion is useful to readers. Endorsements, like all editorials, help spark debate and discussion, an essential part of the democratic process.

Arguments against: We don't interview the presidential candidates, as we do the candidates for local and state offices , and, in this digital age, we have no special access to information about them. Presidential endorsements contribute to the polarization in our society and tend to aggravate readers and lead them to believe our coverage is biased.

What do you think? Is a presidential endorsement still a useful and viable service the News Sentinel should provide? Vote here, and add any comments you like.

We can't guarantee that we will abide by a majority vote, but your feedback will be useful in helping us make a decision.
