electoral nightmare
http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/nation/president/2004-09-01-tie_x.htm

sorry if this has already been posted

"An Electoral College tie.

Shifts in electoral votes and the realities of an evenly divided nation mean there is a credible case that the final tally in Bush vs. Kerry could be 269-269 — an outcome that would throw the election to the House of Representatives."

ugh!

1. The new house may very possibly be
A Democratic majority. We are within striking distance.

7. Yeah, but it's 1 vote per state.
If I remember correctly. That means that Bush would win Florida, but maybe lose Texas.

9. Yes.
"The Constitution outlines what follows in case of a tie, which has happened only once, in 1800. The newly elected House of Representatives chooses the president from the top three finishers; each state has one vote. The newly elected Senate chooses the vice president; each senator has a vote."

11. Thanks
It's not even the house. It's one member of the delegation. Geez.

2. There are a couple ways it could happen.
You never know. One is all the gore states plus NH and WV. Another I believe involves NV. There are others.

5. The new house votes
but each state only gets one vote. So even if the Dem's have a majority, there will still be more than 26 states with Republican delegations. Bush wins in this case.

10. I am confused here
I understand that each State gets one vote, what I don't understand is how do they vote? Can you please help me out here.

13. Each House Delegation gets one vote
so California, with a House Delegation of 53, gets ONE vote. The delegation votes on their choice. Same with every other state. The delegations meet separately and make their choice. I don't know HOW it's done if a state has an evenly split delegation - I guess they just fight it out.

6. this is my personal nightmare too...
...because I was playing on one of those electoral college sites that automatically calculates the winner, and the first 2 probably configurations I came up with were 269-269 ties.

But then... we take the House, and that takes care of that.

We gotta take back the House!

14. As I said above
taking back the house won't work. In case of a tie, there are 50 votes cast in the house, one from each state delegation. There will be more than 25 Republican delegations, due to the prominence of Republicans in small states.

15. Here's the weirdest scenario...
...a Republican House and Democratic Senate (which is what I believe at this point is going to be the way the election plays out as far as Congress is concerned)...the House votes for the Republican candidate for President and the Senate votes for the Democratic candidate for Vice President...and George Bush's VP is - John Edwards. Now THAT would be strange.

16. If I were Edwards, I would stay in there as VP.
Edited on Mon Sep-06-04 05:55 PM by ih8thegop
I would NOT resign. If Bush resigns or is removed from office, wouldn't we all prefer Edwards as President?
