City May Have to Pay Protesters
All Right: Get those checks cut.

As of Friday afternoon, nearly all of the more than 1,800 people arrested during the Republican National Convention had been released. Now some of them might be getting $1,000 checks from New York City.

4. They should come from the RNC, not NYC
Shit, NYC can't afford it !

It's the GOP's fault for choosing to exploit NYC/9-11 in the first place, hit THEM where it hurts, IMO.

5. the city decided to be the rnc's muscle...
let a few cities pay these kind of fines, and maybe they'll stop. i'll go even farther...let a few protesters sue individual police for false arrest and let the cop pay a $1000 fine per incident. then it would really stop.

6. they'll need more than that for the toxic waste side effects they'll
have from being held at Pier 57.

New York -- Representative Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), concerned about the conditions of the detention facility at Pier 57 and their effect on the health of protesters detained there during the Republican National Convention, called on Mayor Bloomberg to immediately assess and inspect conditions at the facility.

In a letter to Bloomberg, Nadler reminded the Mayor that Pier 57, which has been used as a bus depot for the past 30 years and is contaminated with oil, gasoline and other toxic chemicals, is unsafe to hold detainees. Reports from many sources state that some detainees contracted rashes and experienced respiratory ailments while being held at Pier 57.

Nadler's letter to Bloomberg follows:

7. Mayor Bloomberg should be held personally responsible!
& the people of New York City should have to pay & know why. Maybe then Bloomberg will be ousted.

9. No, make Bloomberg pay!
He's got the money, NYC doesn't. On second thought, maybe he should be forced to spend a few nights at the detention center, since he seems to think it's so cushy.

10. Some of which I hope they'll donate some of to DU or MoveOn or Kerry!
...city attorneys argued that the backlog caused by Tuesday's roughly 1,300 arrests made it impossible for them to comply with a long-standing State Court of Appeals ruling, which generally requires the city to process detainees within 24 hours.

If they needed help, they should have asked for it. Or did they not want to pony up the overtime?

11. while I realize the concerns for the burden to NY taxpayers....
I think this is an excellent precedent. Perhaps other cities will balance on the side of restraint rather than countless thousands of "preemptive" sweep arrests, without clear cause.
