I've been steaming over this as the spin gets louder. How on earth does BushCo get away with making their failures in the "war on terra" a campaign issue they win on?! "Kerry wouldn't be on the offense! Our Preznit is strong, he keeps us safe!"
But he DIDN'T keep us safe. 9/11 was a colossal failure of this administration, and now they celebrate it as if it were the crowning glory of their term.
Remember the script before 9/11? I do. It was all about "ICBMs from rogue nations" and reviving "star wars" (paying off defense contractor contributors). I argued for months with people on another board saying ICBMs are NOT the main threat, terrorism is. I was called a "scare-o-crat," I was accused of "inventing terrorist bogeymen," I was told they all had a bridge to sell me, etc. etc...
I didn't have any special knowledge, I didn't have the memos and briefings the Chimp ignored, or the Hart-Rudman report they ignored, or the terrorism expert they ignored, but there was enough there to see we were at greater risk for a terrorist attack than for an ICBM to sail over from Iraq. Tom Daschle gave a speech about defense appropriations in August 2001 also urging more counter-terrorism spending and warning against BushCo's renewed emphasis on star wars.
Even as information has come out about how they failed, and the extent to which they ignored the obvious, they continue to exploit their failure as if it were a success. And even as information has come out about how they've effectively *strengthened* rather than weakened terrorist networks -- by attacking and destabilizing Iraq, by fueling hatred of the US, by refusing to use full force to go after Al Qaeda -- even now, they have the audacity to run on "9/11" and the "global war on terra."
When will the truth be told in a way the American "Moran" population will GET it? General Clark said it so clearly, and it's way past time to hammer this point harder. They did NOT do all they could to prevent 9/11, but were caught with their pants down. And they most definitely did not act responsibly or effectively afterwards -- consequently, contrary to their assertions that "the world is safer" we have seen devastating terrorist attacks throughout the world, and know that it could happen here again.
This reeeeally steams me. 9/11 should be what ruins this administration, not what propels them forward.
