Novak: Privately, Repubs think Bush ruined his own convention
Off script, Bush could sink own ship

"In the midst of their national convention, Republicans experienced a heart-stopping scare. George W. Bush, seemingly absent-minded, misspoke by saying the war against terrorism cannot be won. President Bush corrected the mistake within 24 hours, but the incident reflected the instability of the presidential re-election campaign."
...
"A prominent conservative governor, a staunch Bush backer, said the president had ''stopped his own momentum'' just as it seemed Kerry was in increasing trouble."
...
"The lesson for Bush strategists and other Republican politicians is that George W. Bush is no John F. Kennedy who can nonchalantly respond to reporters' questions. At his best, Bush is tightly disciplined in giving answers that have been carefully prepared. He had answered Lauer's question many times before but chose not to Monday, a loss of concentration he will repeat at his own risk in the next two months."

2. "carefully prepared"...
if you asked him his name without him being "prepared" he couldn't give the correct answer. :freak:

9. I bet he has no idea how many medals/ribbons he was entitled to wear
either. I wish some reporter had the courage to ask him about it.

3. Amazingly,
whenever I read Novak, his revolting voice enters my brain - that sneering, malefactor face is burnt into my brain. I suppose it's from seeing him about 2 hours a day for 20 years on one show or another.

Mentioning Kennedy's name in the samed para with * is its own kind of propaganda, as though they're comparable even when he is saying they're not. Kennedy- Bush Kennedy-Bush Kennedy-Bush...just keep seeing it and you'll soon begin to equate the two.

Well, not 'you' but you get my drift.

10. Has that really been a problem for Republican strategists and politicians?
"The lesson for Bush strategists and other Republican politicians is that George W. Bush is no John F. Kennedy..."

Whom did they confuse Quayle with, FDR?

16. What about Rudy Giuliani's comparison of Bush to Winston Churchill?
at the RNC convention? I sat in stunned silence for a couple minutes questioning whether I had actually heard someone favorably compare the fetid chimpanzee to one of modern history's greatest leaders.

4. It's impossible for me to read Novak's articles without prejudice.
I'm just always questioning his motivation. He's such a swiveling elitist douchebag asshat.

Excellent article, though, sampsonblk! :D

5. no shit...
Bush couldn't box his way out of a bag of pretzel chips...

And as far as Novak is concerned, why exactly hasn't he been indicted or at least subpeoned yet for a breech of national security in the war against terror? The guy did some damage after all...

6. I just hope that the debate(s) - if they are held
are structured so that Bush is required to do more than recite carefully memorized little speeches. Of course, I'm not holding my breath.

7. Reinforcing low expectations?
Is this article setting the stage for excuses for *'s poor debate performance?

8. I hadn't thought of that.
It could be.

The thing that grabbed me was that they think Bush ruined the huge, sustained bounce they thought was going to come from the convention. It does look like Bush had a big jump in the polls prior to his speech, and that it dissipated as soon as he opened his mouth.

12. Mwahahaha
Dunno is Novak knows this, but the underlying message he just sent, while fussing about whether Bush was "clear" in his explanation of what he meant, is that he can't be clear in explaining he misspoke.

What he said is perfectly and obviously true, it can't be won. And if the public figures THAT out....*gasp!*

The wizard of Oz is suddenly revealed by a slight breeze that moved the curtain. Novak and crew are hurriedly scrambling to sew and pin and keep it in place!

18. TWo things that grab me
1. Lots of experts have been saying the same thing. It seems Bush knows its true, but wasn't supposed to actually say it.

2. Repubs seem to condone hoodwinking the public. Truth doesn't matter as much as "staying on message."

13. kerry will beat his ass in the debates like he stole money
i am waiting for this from kerry when bush talks about how "he" is fighting for america....

"just what war did you serve in george?"

"you sent others into harm's way but refused to do so yourself when this nation called."

"no true leader asks of others what he would not willingly do himself."

22. Note the Bushies after that remark are trying to get out of debates
They're scared their boy is going to flub this badly. He's even more addled than 4 years ago.

Kerry needs to call the Chickenhawks out if they try to get away with this.

to make sure the American people knew he would be a war president(sic) FOREVER!

Wonder how the big boys broke it to him that he made a Huge Mistake?

17. Bush blurted out their strategy: perpetual war. He forgot that that's what
they want, but not what they want people to think.

A mistake like that is inevitable when they have so many balls in the air. They're bound to have Freudian slips like that.

25. And that's why there will be no debates.
He'll get a pass on that, like everything else.

Rove is not going to take the chance of him imploding on live TV in front of millions of viewers.
