First, I want to say thanks for everyone who is doing this kind of work in addition to blowing off steam on this board. This last push is really important. We all know that.
I'd also like to hear more specifically what you are doing for the campaign when you are away from DU. Do you feel you are getting through to undecided voters or not? Are you canvassing/phoning in your own neighborhood, travelling to a battleground state, or calling another area? Do you love or hate doing this kind of thing?
I was precinct captain and did a ton of calling in the primaries--literally thousands of calls--in both Texas and other states. I felt I did some good and actually got pretty comfortable, but then let things slip over the summer. These last two weeks, I am determined to invest some serious time. Since I'm in red Texas, we're being encouraged to call or work in another state. Family responsibilities mean I can't pick up and travel elsewhere even though I'd love to do that. So I am working the phones instead. I've already started in Missouri and will also call Jewish voters in Pa. Plus I'm doing some canvassing for local candidates here.
I had a grim session in Missouri this evening. Didn't get a single Obama supporter but several McCain people and a few undecideds. I tried talking to people but couldn't break through. Sometimes I wonder if we've reached the point where people are no longer persuadable as they were earlier this year. But I'm not read to give up. Will try again tomorrow and hope for better luck.
One good thing about this kind of work.....you spend less time worrying about dumb polls and more time focusing on the very real and practical problems of persuading/dealing with individual voters. So how's it going with you?
