1. If it's dead even on election day, Kerry wins
The incumbent needs to be at least 5 points up to be assured of winning on election day. Anything less reveals a lack of enthusiasm for his re-election, and one must assume that most undecideds will vote for the challenger.

3. That's assuming there are undecideds to speak of
I don't think there will be a measurable amount of undecided voters in the final polls taken before election day.

The race will be so close that the polls will be muddled within the MoE, IMHO.

4. OMG OMG OMG!!! Bush is ahead, he got a bounce! We're doomed!!!
This poll is clear evidence that Bush will win! Fox said so! Obviously we already lost! No use voting! We lost!

(/stupid)

All these hysterics over the polls are either morons or trolls from Freeperland/CUmstain Mecca.

5. at the grocery store check-out line
my partner stood in a check-out line at our local grocery store -- behind her two people were discussing bush* and his appearance in the area this past Friday

although not widely reported - the stadium was not as full as expected - road to the stadium was closed off when bush* arrived (for security concerns) leaving up to 5,000 'bush*-supporters' stuck and unable to attend. One of the people in the check-out line was among these.

the second person said "yeah, but you couldn't really see bush* anyways - he had is back turned to 90% of the crowd the whole time, so all you could see were the backs of people standing behind him..."

As my partner finished paying - she turned to the two people and said "he's had his back turned to most people since getting into office, why would he change now?"

They glared at her, but the cashier chuckled and said "that sounds about right to me...I use to have one good paying job, but now I've got two low-paying jobs and my husband was just laid-off"

7. All this is going to set off SO many people's bullshit indicators
Everyone's favorite oxymoron, conventional wisdom, tells us that the electorate is mostly decided. Of all the pronouncements out there, this one's at least somewhat true. So how come ninnyboy gets an eleven, count 'em, eleven point bounce from the Manhattan Hatefest? Top that off with its sudden evaporation, and voila: ze polls, dey're not so magnifique, non? The olfactory crapometer's redlining like Junior's eyes after the pretzel incident.

To many, it's all show biz and flummery, and since the Republicans are in control of everything, they've got to get most of the stink rubbed off on 'em.

Also, the trajectory for these clowns is momentarily down, and that means that the herd is spooked.

They're playing a holding game now, and they have to keep a lid on a whole bunch of lies: the economy, the soon-to-be-four-digit Iraq disaster, the various scandals and the truth of their own personalities and actions. That's a lot of containment.

They're good, but they're only that. They're not great. Lee Atwater could've mopped the floor with Karl Rove without even breaking a sweat.

10. Am I naive in not giving a fuck about these polls?
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 04:05 AM by gee double you bee
It's all about the electoral college, baby! It seems almost literally impossible that Kerry won't win all the states Gore did, plus at least one swing state, and that's all he has to do, right? I really can't see under what circumstances that's not going happen.

11. No, you are not naive. Winning the popular vote makes you
Edited on Tue Sep-07-04 04:50 AM by MajorFlaw
a footnote, ask president Gore. Anyone who talks about the election in terms of national percentages and not state by state electoral counts is obviously not serious. All Kerry has to do is turn one shrub state from 2000 around and he wins. That's all this is about.
