Woo Hoo! I Got Quoted in Our Local Paper!
The article is "Parties out to win votes from women" and its about how both sides want women to vote. I think the whole thing is worth reading, but I'm just going to post the stuff I said here. I talked more about how Bush is responsible for 9/11, but I guess that may have been "too controversial." And I am SHOCKED they put in the "brain" comment! :) http://theoaklandpress.com/stories/090504/loc_20040905031.shtml

<snip>

Waterford Township resident and self-described political independent Ida Briggs, meanwhile, is serving this year as a Democratic precinct captain in two Waterford precincts. It's the first time she's ever volunteered for a political campaign.

Briggs said that, while she has voted for Democrats, such as Al Gore and Gov. Jennifer Granholm, she's also voted for Republicans, such as Michigan Secretary of State Terri Lynn Land and Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson.

"I truly am an independent," she said. "I study the people to determine who I think will do a better job. To be perfectly frank, if I don't know anything about any of the candidates, I vote for the woman on the ticket."

Briggs, who owns a small software business, said she's supporting Kerry this year on issues such as national security, health care and stem cell research, among others. She said health care costs are "absolutely destroying our economy right now," and said she has lost several relatives who have died from diseases such as Alzheimer's and multiple sclerosis who might have benefited from policies allowing more stem cell research.

"At first, I was an 'anybody but Bush' supporter," she said. "But the more I found out about Kerry, the happier I am. He's a combat-tested Navy veteran, so I know he understands what's going on with war."

She added: "He's fiscally conservative and socially liberal, which is what I want, and he's got a brain."

3. Way to go!
It's the first time she's ever volunteered for a political campaign.
Yes! A lot of us are doing things for the first time this year--first protest march, first time working for a campaign, first time voting even after being eligible for years.

"If I don't know anything about any of the candidates, I vote for the woman on the ticket."
I have followed this rule for many years. A woman is less likely to be corrupt or corruptible, and more likely to be thoughtful and conscientious.

"...and he's got a brain."
Hey, lighten up! Bush has a brain. Just not one of his own.

Thanks for all you're doing!

10. Congrats Ida
The same thing happened to me this week...

I got a letter to the editor published in the Detroit Free Press on Friday.

"Kerry bashing

All I heard during the Democratic National Convention was how the Democrats had to avoid sounding negative and had to avoid bashing President George W. Bush. Meanwhile, the Republicans during their convention have said nothing positive and have bashed Sen. John Kerry mercilessly.

Scott Baker-Young
Ferndale "

We need to keep this going...

Good going.

BTW - I heard Gov. Granholm speak yesterday in a taped manufacturing job forum chaired by Senator Clinton. Gov. Granholm is one sharp and eloquent lady.
