Some person who CLAIMS to be a U.S. Marine says that 400,000 troops have pledged to quit the military if Obama wins.

It's damn unpatriotic to accuse our brave men and women of planning mutiny (Sedition? Treason?) against their elected government.

So, the possibilities are:

1) This guy is lying. In which case, if he *is* in the military, accusing his fellow troops of mutiny may be illegal.
2) This guy has been lied to. I'd like to find out by whom. And trust me, I looked.
3) This guy has knowledge that 400,000 U.S. troops have pledged to commit what is a capitol offense under military law.

The conversation took place through Upoc.com text messaging.

So, basically I have to decide whether this is simply something that needs to be debunked, or something that needs to be reported to someone.

The messages are to be read from the bottom up to the top (most recent is top, oldest is bottom).

Oh, and he also thinks G. Gordon Liddy was right that you should shoot federal agents. He says you need to shoot them TWICE.

51. Of course they don't move to Canada.
I happen to retain my Canadian citizenship so I might just move back.

However most people on this list would find it hard to emigrate to Canada as the immigration policy specifically looks for highly qualified people with specific qualifications. In short, if they don't need your skills . So unless you meet those criteria, then you are SOL, eh.

Having said that there are over 2 billion dollars in pending construction projects in northern alberta alone, not to mention a constant need for workers in the petroleum industry. So if you have the skills you could be making HUGE money up there.

Just sayin'. Besides if you love this country and her people, then you need to stay here and fight for her.

6. Perhaps the reason for a dearth of information
is that it's pure, unadulterated bullshit. If it's especially fresh, perhaps it hasn't had time to get debunked at Snopes. Consider forwarding it to Snopes yourself. Perhaps it's like when there's a power outage in your neighborhood; everyone assumes that someone else has already alerted the power company.

23. Total number of US active duty personnel is 1.4 million.
<snip>

Military strength
The four U.S. armed services--the Army, the Air Force, the Navy, and the Marines--have a combined force of about 1.4 million active-duty personnel. The U.S. Army, with 480,000 active-duty soldiers and 200,000 reservists, is one of the largest in the world. A few other countries have larger armies, but none can bring superior armaments or technology to a conflict limited to conventional, nonnuclear weapons. No other country can match the United States in naval power, and in air warfare only Russia has fighter aircraft that can equal those of the United States.

source: http://encarta.msn.com/encnet/features/guides/?article=usmilitarymain

Common sense says that 400k/1.4m (what's that, like 30% of all active duty?) are not going to suddenly resign.

This so-called Marine, if he is one, is full of shit.

I suspect it's more likely he's a member of the 101st Fighting Keyboarders Brigade.

Interesting to see some of the interest groups, not surprising as the home company is in NYC on broadway near NYU.
I don't see any themes here, could be just crazyness, students playing superspy war games?
Or, could it be more, would cell phones be a great way to organize a mass movement?

Interesting topic to follow....don't really think any number of troops will go AWOL over Obama, but it's interesting.

And my anecdotal experience with Upoc is that the major users are (in order of prevalence):

1) Far-right Chasidic Jews
2) Bisexual Wicans
3) African-Americans cruising for sex
4) Non-Afrincan-Americans cruising for sex, most often with truckers.
5) Prostitutes from Texas creating their own message groups to attract and maintain ties with their "Johns"
6) Everyone else

65. No. His mommy must have sent him to bed. And yeah, it's pretty effective networking.
I used it during Katrina.

Which is when I learned that I am wrong precisely 1 time out of 12.

During Katrina, I was capturing data from CNN and posting it on DU, while simultaneously posting information from DU onto the Katrina and Disaster groups on Upoc.

In the midst of all that, I accidentally typed that the roof on the stadium was reported to have blown 1/2 off... when it was in fact being reported on CNN to have blown 1/12 off.

And someone... I don't remember who... laid into me BIG TIME for being sloppy, irresponsible, contributing to un-needed panic, etc.

And as calmer minds talked me and others down, we settled into realizing that I am wrong 1/12th of the time.

30. This is just TOO easy to swat away.
First, just as you don't "get a job" in the military, you don't just quit when you feel like it. That's called going AWOL and is a serious offense. I'll bet any sum you like that 400,000 ENLISTED soldiers have not claimed that they will commit such a serious crime if Obama is elected.

Second, in any discussion of this nature it is the claimants job to prove his accusations, not yours to refute them. The only way to PROVE someone has not said something is to read or hear every single thing that person has ever said. It's an impossibility. Let this idiot prove it to you or tell him he's an inbred mouth-breather and be done with.

Third, yes, this could be an act of sedition if this person is in the military. He plainly states that 400,000 troops have taken an oath to leave the military then in the next response states that he is one of them ("...we are done supporting you..."). Unless I'm mistaken, it's illegal for a soldier to take an oath that would subvert the government he/she is sworn to protect. Send this on to the MPs or FBI and let them have fun with it.

And forth, stop talking to this moran. He will do nothing but suck away energy and intelligence from you.

or

"That whole Three Mile Island thing? That was all John McCain's fault."

or

"Remember that really sucky Bills field goal kicker they had a few years back, lost them two Super Bowls? It was John McCain."

"Razors in the apples, ruining Halloween? You're probably thinking that was John McCain, close, it was Sarah Palin."

"If Sarah Palin is elected VP, we will all be required to shoot our pets."

34. 29% of the military is going to 'quit'?

1) YOU CAN'T JUST LEAVE THE MILITARY

once you take that oath you go where they tell you and do what they say for the duration.
Just 'leaving' is known as desertion. You can do time for it and you'll carry bad paper for the rest of your life.
The vast majority of military personnel would never even consider it.

2) even if you *could just leave, 400,000 would be 29% of all active military.

that would mean more than 1 in 4 military personnel dislike Obama so much they'd be willing to toss their military careers.
serious bullshit

Read from the LAST message and go UP toward the top one:

Oct 26 9:05PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
You should be ashamed. You should be very ashamed.

Oct 26 9:05PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
How DARE you accuse our troops of plotting mutiny & Treason after all they have suffered in the hands of your pResident

Oct 26 9:04PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
And no, if not 4politics, you & I would *NOT* be friends. I don't associate with lying cowards who disparage our troops.

Oct 26 9:03PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
I would hate to serve in the unit with someone who so cavalierly accuses me of conspiring to commit Mutiny.

Oct 26 9:03PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
... to commit a capitol offense. Hope for your sake you ARE lying about being a Marine.

Oct 26 9:02PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
Right now, I'm trying to figure out if I need to report you to the military for accusing fellow troops of conspiring...

Oct 26 9:02PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
Including ungrateful, unpatriotic, lying wannabees like you.

Oct 26 9:02PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
... and disparages and trivializes the service of our brave men and women who are fighting and dying for our country.

Oct 26 9:01PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
Saying 400,000 troops are going to mutiny threatens unit cohesion and gives aid and comfort to our enemies...

Oct 26 9:01PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
And if you actually ARE in the military, you are violating USMC by disparaging &questioning the loyalty of fellow troops

Oct 26 9:00PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
Secondly, you are not a Marine. Marines never quit, and they ALWAYS capitalize the "M" in Marine.

Oct 26 8:59PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
Someone is just repeating the same Urban Legend, except this time it's supposedly over Obama.

Oct 26 8:59PM
Fr: IANDB1 To: zkaryah
In 1992, there was an Urban Legend that said 400,000 members of the U.S. military would quit if he were elected...

44. Tell this Tim McVeigh wannabee character "good luck" with his court martial !
(or rather his civilian court trial since he is almost certainly not actively serving in the military.) That's assuming he's not lying about what he says he knows.

If he is lying, he should be more careful what he posts from his Mom's computer in the future. Because if the authorities come to interview her/him, he's gonna be grounded for at least a month.

57. I've been posting regularly to the group for years with a very liberal slant.
Edited on Sun Oct-26-08 09:41 PM by IanDB1
Because, as you know, reality has a well-known liberal bias.

Mostly posting links back to DU.

And some day, I may have information that could save the life of someone on that group, since I get stuff here on DU faster than most people would get it anywhere.

Hopefully, everyone on that group who hates Liberals and my "liberal bias" will already have me on ignore and miss that information that COULD have saved their life.

This guy is full of crap - tell him to put up or shut up..

Pledged WHERE?

Are they on record somewhere saying they will desert?

If so this list needs to be submitted to the CID and Judge Advocate General's office for investigation - this would be desertion, mutiny, incitement to mutiny...have I missed anything here? The guy making this claim is obstructing justice if he knows the names but is withholding them.

If NOT then he's a bullshitter not to be believed.
