109 yr old daughter of slaves votes for Obama...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.democraticunderground.com...ss=132x7628327

Amanda Jones, 109, the daughter of a man born into slavery, has lived a life long enough to touch three centuries. And after voting consistently as a Democrat for 70 years, she has voted early for the country's first black presidential nominee.

The middle child of 13, Jones, who is African American, is part of a family that has lived in Republican-leaning Bastrop County for five generations. The family has remained a fixture in Cedar Creek and other parts of the county, even when its members had to eat at segregated barbecue dives and walk through the back door while white customers walked through the front, said Amanda Jones' 68-year-old daughter, Joyce Jones.

(snip)

Amanda Jones says she cast her first presidential vote for Franklin Roosevelt, but she doesn't recall which of his four terms that was. When she did vote, she paid a poll tax, her daughters said. That she is able, for the first time, to vote for a black presidential nominee for free fills her with joy, Jones said.

11. I'm surprised they didn't try to disenfranchise her. Thank goodness she
has lived long enough to see this election.

"And many more" to Ms. Amanda Jones.

The DU link at the top of the OP isn't working for me. Is it working for other DUers?

31. They did try to stop her voting - that was the point of the poll tax.
Google "poll tax" - it was a traditional method of keeping blacks (who rarely could afford it) from voting, and not made illegal until 1964. She was a determined woman to keep voting.

Poll taxes and testing were outrageous barriers.

17. That's one of the reasons why I vote in every election.
My ancestors and hers have taken voting seriously. They even paid a poll tax (like my mother, father and older relatives) to vote. If I have to walk ten miles to a voting precinct, I will do it. I haven't missed an election yet.

Bless Ms. Jones' heart. She is an inspiration to all of us.

What with the family member with a police uniform and all...

All kidding aside, this woman is truly remarkable.

When early voting started in GA someone said the vote was 400 years in the making. I just can't imagine the pride she must feel. And while we've made a lot of progress we must keep ever vigilant. We see the other side stoking flames and we see extremists willing to commit acts of violence.

I hope she (and all of us) can witness something never imaginable next week. Where we as a country reject the politics of hatred and division and fear. We will make it happen.

let her hold the bible Mr. Obama will be sworn in on

Seriously, and I don't CARE what traditions are out there, they ought to let her hold it. Let the justice deliver the oath if they must, but surely this would be something to never ever forget for our children and generations to come.

Hopefully, someone close to the campaign will get this note.
